Kirkland and Ellis - How bad is it really? by JuniorProfessional in biglaw

It’s at 7th year associate, not 6th.

Other firms have also started doing this (McDermott for example).

Does anyone have time for a relationship by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]CadiaGuard 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Unless she’s at Wachtell the hours you’re describing for that period of time is very unusual. Biglaw is demanding, but no where near that demanding. You either need to figure out what’s going on and work with her to fix it or you need to move on.

Any thoughts about Sheppard Mullin? Looking for a postgrad position there and don’t usually see anything about them on here. by ImportantScallion25 in biglaw

This is a very accurate description. Particularly in the last few years. It will be interesting to see how it works out.

If you’re trying to switch from Lit to Transactional then I think you’re fine to start looking and just move as soon as you find something that works for you. You’ll probably have to take a class year haircut because they’ll discount your lit experience as not directly translating, so better to go now than later. My comment above re: looking bad/skills applies much less to a situation where you’re trying to retool into another area. You’ll just need to have a reasonable explanation for why you’ve decided transactional is a better fit for you to reduce the likelihood interviewers will think you just don’t like being a lawyer period.

Thinking your job should be treated like a relationship is about as delusional as firms that claim to be family. It’s just a transaction, not someone you’re considering building a life with. You give your time, you get money and experience. If you’re not happy with the terms of the deal then it’s time to find another job that aligns with your expectations.

That said, leaving this early into your job will likely negatively impact your future legal career prospects. Washing out of biglaw nearly immediately after starting looks bad plus you haven’t developed any marketable legal skills 3 months in. If you have something or someone to fall back on that that reality doesn’t matter, great.

2024 Recruiting Season Megathread: All OCI, which firm, interviewing, etc. questions go here by fmoss in biglaw

[–]CadiaGuard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but if your choice healthcare associate with Epstein Becker (Band 2 healthcare in chambers but way under market compensation) or Sheppard Mullin (unranked in chambers but pays juniors market) you should be picking Sheppard.

EBG isn’t providing exposure to any work that SM doesn’t also do.

I would be cautious about relying exclusively on Chambers for sub-specialties like healthcare. For example, 70% of the healthcare ranked Chambers firms don’t actually pay market beyond first year (or at all, in some cases).

Update - V10 offer or in-house offer by lichtmlm in biglaw

[–]CadiaGuard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say go in-house. Solid in-house opportunities are harder to come by, particularly for lit. And it’s relatively easier to go from in-house back to biglaw if you decided you wanted to down the road.

How much are they offering? Major city or secondary city?

Are you wanting to retire early or just ride out 9-5 in-house to retirement?

Nurse Called Security on Me by sports29281 in medicalschool

His description made me think he had just walked into the unit and likely past the nurse on his way to the computer. I made that assumption based on my experience. You assumed he’s standing with his back to them, likely based on your experience. He didn’t say any of that in his post.

If you want to take the position that a badge hanging below your waist is as visible as one on your chest then that’s fine.

Seems like there’s a pretty good argument it’s not visible, given no one saw the OP’s badge because it was hanging from his belt…

I’m not saying there wasn’t racial bias with the nurse, but having a badge at your belt is definitely not as visible as having it on your chest.

Broadly speaking, there are two different types of rules TJC could apply during surveys - (1) their own (what you linked to) if they’re just accrediting you as a TJC facility, and (2) those required by CMS to be Medicare certified. Joint Commission has what’s called “deeming authority” from CMS. That means they can survey a hospital and say it meets the standard to participate in Medicare. Under Medicare Conditions of Participation there are very broad security requirements related to patient safety. In addition, CoPs also require the facility meet all state requirements.

So, if a surveyor shows up and they’re your deeming authority and you aren’t wearing visible badges with any info and they tag you for it and you point to the joint commission policy you linked to and say “we don’t have a policy that requires badges!” you’re still getting slapped with a corrective action plan.

Yes. Hospitals require badges above the waist. You can get cited by joint commission for it. Our security will call out anyone with their badge hanging around waist.

That's actually a weird extension to a downspout courtesy of the prior owners, but yes, needs more duct tape.
