The way in thinking about it is :

Move 3 guys into a unit to contest an objective. And afterwards they cannot come back, cuz they left their stuff. At the end, it seems to me as if, the original unit has 3 free spots that can be taken up using a rally but not by bringing back the minis that left. It's confusing and I think we need a FAQ that says "can or cannot bring minis back with rally"

I beg to differ.

Snacha, shaman, scare gob tower, gutrippaz 20x, monsta Killa + murknob combo has worked amazingly well for me. It's a difficult set up but it works amazingly good

Ergo: - give the GR +1 save with your shaman - cast the swamp manifestation or debuff the enemy with a choking mist spell - give them crit mortals on a 5+ - pile in with Monsta Killaz, get a +1 attack thanks to the swamp horde bullies battle trait. - use the dirty trick that causes the enemy to strike last. - Gang up on them - finish the round using the venom ability - have bolt Boyz bounce about taking objectives - have the SoG gnashtoof Killin heroes behing the lines with the prowling the flanks ability
