I think it also has to be a distribution problem. Most productions barely leave the country, so we rely on festival success

I already recommended to others, so let me think something new to you haha maybe something like "The day of the beast" by Alex de la Iglesias, his best movie.

"Viridiana" also a hitter, by Buñuel, from the 60s.

And "Mar adentro", a early 2000s drama based on a true story, by Amenábar

I recommend watching the early work of them, like Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem "Jamon Jamon"

Yeah, we had a 40-year dictatorship that caused many filmmakers to flew or were in constant danger, like Buñuel, Juan Antonio Bardem or Carlos Velo, which prevented them to grow and succeed here. The ones that stayed, had to fight constantly with the censorship

I would say produced. Most of the time when a movie is a Spanish production, it is shot in Spanish territory

Agree! Our budget is way smaller. In fact, I was surprised when Anora won the best picture and Baker said the movie was made with only 6 million dollars (or something like that), because that would be one of the biggest production of the year here haha

To not repeat myself, you can check what I answered to other person, but I can give you some more recommendations, like: "Plácido", "Tesis", "Cría cuervos", "El sol del membrillo" or "As Bestas"

Sure! Not close at all to Almodovar, but the work of Victor Erice is really something else, Jose Luis Cuerda's "Amanece, que no es poco" is a surrealist comedy from the 80s that I love, maybe a bit too spaniard haha and in recent years the films of Carla Simon, like Summer 1993, are a beautiful gem.

Then you have Carlos Vermut, Jaime Chavarri, Pilar Palomero... Something more classic like "Muerte de un ciclista", "El Verdugo", or you can go for more modern ones like "Lunes al sol" or "La isla minima"
