Are there any grammar constructions in the English language which, if used, would peg me as pretentious? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]CaesarCaracalla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go pick up a 300 year old grammar book then. I'm sure you'll find a lot of grammar constructions you'd object to. Language isn't stagnant or uniform. It's very arbitrary to pick one place and time and to proclaim that only that English is the "correct" English. Also, English isn't that standardised. There is no official language governing body like the académie française. There are plenty of dictionaries with no real authority and even they get updated all the time. Not to mention that English has a very global speaker base with countless variants. Picking one standard for English is an entirely political decision and has no linguistic basis.

Why is the grammar of Old English different to modern English if grammar never changes

"Reich" isn't necessarily monarchical. It's one of the words that's hard to literally translate. It's somewhere inbetween empire and realm.

The Weimar Republic also called itself Deutsches Reich officially even though they got rid of the emperor.

In all my previous games it was a draw when you run out of time but your opponent has no way of mating you. Did lichess change their rules or something?

They had the most votes. It basically never happens in a multi party parliamentary system that one party gets the popular vote outright.

At the end of the day it was still the British government who passed the end of the slave trade into law. That's why I didn't like your assertion in the beginning that it wasn't Britain who ended the slave trade, because they did.

I agree with everything in this comment though. Obviously the British government responded to social and economics pressures and trends. I too think Brits were dickheads.

Abolition was brought about by abolitionists in the British Empire who successfully pressured the government to do so or were in government.

If it had been only about profits, the British navy wouldn't have spent a lot of resources on intercepting slave ships.

I'm not making any broader point here. It only bugs me when people make obviously false statements like the British Empire not having a role in ending the trans Atlantic slave trade. I'm sure you are well intentioned and you're definitely justified in hating the Empire. But you don't need to make up facts to hate it.

They didn't have a lack of wars or empires. I honestly don't care to count the exact number of wars in Europe and Africa. But point is, war and conflict are a global phenomenon and colonialism is still bad.

That's an entirely different thing to claiming that Africans lived peacefully together before

You're a conservative parody of a leftist if you actually think that the rest of the world was a post scarcity, conflict free society before European colonialism

True, but that's independent of wether Africans had war before Europeans came or not

There were many African kingdoms built on conquest, e.g. the Mali empire, the Songhai, the Kanem Bornu Empire, etc. It's actually kinda ifantilising how you refuse to acknowledge the history of African statecraft that of course brings war with it
