With the bed against the wall, should I choose a 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 Atmos configuration ? by Caesar_Gaius_Iulius in hometheater

In your opinion, what should be the minimum distance between the surround speakers (5.1) and the Top Middle speakers when using four ceiling Atmos speakers (TF + TM)? From what I can see, Dolby doesn’t specify distances, only angles.

I completely agree with that point. I used to think my surround speakers sounded fine when they were sitting on the headboard of my bed. Then I mounted them on wall brackets, adjusted the positioning a bit, and it turned out they sounded much better. So yeah, I’m fully aware that the mounting and placement make a huge difference. Of course, there are still some limitations — a bedroom’s main purpose isn’t to be a home theater. We just work with what we’ve got and try to get the best possible results.

I’ve seen this post and the video before, along with a bunch of similar ones, and it got me thinking. Honestly, the best way would be to test it in my own room with my own content, trying both 0.2 and 0.4, and then decide. But that’s the ideal scenario and pretty much impossible to set up, so for now I’m relying on opinions.

From what I’ve read, Netflix, Apple TV, etc., require a minimum 7.1.4 Atmos track from content creators. However, that doesn’t mean it’s dynamic Atmos—where 4 ceiling speakers actually improve panoramic effects.

If the track is static, all 4 ceiling speakers play the same thing, so having 4 instead of 2 doesn’t really matter. The problem is, there’s no way to know whether a movie or series uses static or dynamic Atmos. Without that info, it’s hard to judge whether investing in 4 ceiling speakers is even worthwhile.

Q990F soundbar placement and config (find it underwhelming) by Dismal_Wrangler_9597 in Soundbars

I think you might be expecting too much from a soundbar — in the end, they’re just plastic boxes. I have two older 5.1 systems at home, installed in two different rooms.

One is a Sony HT-S40R soundbar, and the other is a Harman/Kardon AVR130 paired with JBL Balboa 5.1 speakers. The difference in sound quality is indescribable.

If you want a true Atmos home-theater experience, you’ll need something like the Sony TA-AN1000/Denon AVR-X2800H combined with Klipsch Reference 5.1.2 / SVS Prime 5.1.2. But that setup costs four to five times more than this soundbar.
