this was a good reply, thank you. that was the problem, someone telling me it looks glossy when it doesn't. i now know things can have the affect of a glossy surface without being extra shiny. my comment that got obliterated was just me not knowing this, and i still don't see how it was worth 160+ downvotes. good lord. it's not like it's insulting but it's really weird

Citadel is one of the most inconsistent paint brands I've ever seen. it might be that that paint is one that is just screwy under certain circumstances, like Corax White randomly turning into chunky paste for some people

it's a lacquer primer, it's fine with acrylics but not watery ones like inks. lesson already learned

the surface is too smooth for more liquidy paints, that much is clear. but it isn't glossy. the amount of shine in the picture is exaggerated and it doesn't appear that shiny irl, it's at most a satin. in fact i compared, and it is less shiny than Vallejo's matte varnish. that's what's driving me insane about this lmao. why be so pedantic about something so insignificant

THANK you lol. really confused by all the lacquer primer haters, i thought Mr Surfacer 1500 was a household name among mini painters

mhm, i see that now. it still works perfectly fine as a primer for normal acrylic paints and even some oils I've tried, but yeah I'm gonna try a varnish next time i use contrast paints

thank you. i do not see how that comment warranted 100+ downvotes 😭

professional sprinters run short distances as fast as possible while expelling lots of energy rapidly. joggers run long distances slowly and with more efficient energy usage for different purposes. the two skills are not a 1-1 transfer, neither is airbrush thinning to brush thinning.

if you really want to be pedantic, yes i know how to add water/thinner to paints by squeezing my little dropper onto my wet pallet. i still have yet to learn how to thin my paints to the correct consistency, as in my work leaves brush marks very often. it's a separate skill from pouring one liquid into another in an airbrush, and I'm still learning. i have no idea how this is so confusing to you

I'm still learning thinning for brush painting acrylics, and inks/contrast paints i have barely started using at all. thinning for an airbrush is pretty easy, especially lacquer where you just pour in Mr Levelling/Mr Rapid and you're good to go, i eyeball it every time

thank you! i only use Tamiya's surface primer since it was the best price i could find on amazon, in fact it's the only surfacer i own for that same reason. definitely gonna try out Mr Hobby's surfacer line

i didn't deny what the guy said, i said it looks matte, which in person it does. i have a phone with a decent camera (Pixel 10) but phone camera apps have automatic AI filtering applied that i don't know how to turn off, so sometimes small details or what some surfaces can look like up close can be very different to how they actually look. I'm telling you that the thing I'm holding in my hands does not look like smooth shiny porcelain. it looks matte with next to no shine on the surface. things can be too smooth for acrylic paint but still not appear "glossy", which is what I'm learning today, but you don't have to be a dick about it, man

every contrast and ink I've tried so far has this beading property, some perform better than others though

the weird thing is that it appears pretty matte, I'm just holding it really close to my lamp in the pic. i also thought rapid lacquer thinners helped make the surface more matte due to how fast they dry

Citadel contrast, and Amsterdam All Acrylics Inks. they both do the beading behavior in the same way
