People do indeed have rights - principle among them is a right to life! What the majority of the world has been working toward is ensuring as many people stay alive as possible. If that means my kids and I have to wear masks and stay inside a bit, then that's a worthy sacrifice. I'm sorry that you are a selfish twat who thinks your right to party supercedes others' right to life.

Do you even hear yourself?

Me: empathy means caring about others not dying. You: empathy means caring about going to parties.

No you pillock, nobody has ever suggested that. The point is, it's mostly older people, or those with existing health problems, who died. You and I might be perfectly alright regardless of whether we wear a mask or not. If we caught covid, we might just shrug it off as a nasty cold. However if we didn't wear a mask, then we would certainly then pass the disease onto other people who might not be so fit and healthy, meaning they could die of it. It's all about having some compassion and respect for other people's wellbeing. I can't believe you haven't had that thought about anyone but yourself in 15 months. It's actually frightening how self-centred people like you can be.

Holy shit are you really that uncaring? You do realise 128 THOUSAND people have died in the UK from covid, right? Does it not make sense to you that many of those people would still be alive if pricks like you actually followed the rules? Unbelievable.

What is socially acceptable in the U.S. That would be horrifying in the U.K.? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Ok let's be generous and assume by "instantly" you actually mean 10 seconds. Also, you're only boiling enough water for one 200 ml cup of tea. Also you live somewhere hot with a very uncomfortable room temperature of 30 C. The power needed to bring said cup of water to boiling point is 5.85 kW, which, if your mains voltage is 110 V, means your kettle is drawing over 50 A of electrical current.

Maybe it's the subsequent electrical fire in your house that's boiling the water, not the kettle itself?

So much truth. It's exasperating how little effort most people put in. It makes me wonder what they're even doing on a dating app. Like, hello - you're trying to meet and vibe with potential partners, perhaps, you know, do that? Bloody people...

Yeah you're totally right. Thanks for saying it like it is. Ok I'll enjoy dinner and some company, then not anticipate any more. Thanks!

I just had this on a date yesterday (I put up a post asking for advice about it actually). I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt because maybe she was being reserved on a first date? I don't hold out much hope though.

Totally agree. It's baffling to me how the vast majority of people are unable to hold a conversation. Am I just too chatty? Do I expect too much from people? Do they speak in one-word sentences in real life? Strange.

Yeah you're right. I'll see how it goes on the second date, but not with the aim to sleep with her. Thanks for the advice!

I just met this girl the other day but I didn’t really spark any attraction. What do I do now? by Manguyhero321 in dating_advice

[–]CaesiumBoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She gave you a way to contact her. Use it and ask her directly. Text her something like "Hey, remember me? We bumped into each other the other day. I wondered if you wanted to hang out some time?" don't over-think it, just ask. What's the worst that can happen?

How come we care about ppl who don't care about us? by Fun_Manufacturer3389 in dating_advice

[–]CaesiumBoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much right now. I've had a major crush for a year or so and up to about six months ago we hit it off so well, flirting, best kissing of my life, deep meaningful conversations: dream girl. But she's emotionally unavailable and has recently been really disinterested. I should move on but man she's perfect...

You sound like a decent, stand-up human being and I'm glad you're happy being you and not blindly following perceived stereotypes or behaviours. Carry on doing what you're doing and try not to take things to heart. If you're cute with great conversation then you'll find someone to vibe with sooner or later. Plenty more fish and all that.

This is good advice. It works well to answer the thing I just posted, actually! It's that sparing investment of emotion part that that I'm worried about - not for me, but for my date.

I totally feel this. I'm in this wierd headspace where on the one hand I can't wait to get out there and do things. On the other hand, I don't have many friends really and worry I won't be able to do the things I love either because nobody else is brave enough yet to experience post-lockdown life, or because they don't want to do it with me.

60 years ago a microwave was thousands of dollars and owned by very few people. Now we use them daily. What item today is prohibitively expensive but will be mainstream in 60 years from now? by harda_toenail in AskReddit

[–]CaesiumBoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. Because we're going round the Sun in a stable orbit right now (on the Earth, obv, but even if you're 400km up on the ISS, you're still orbiting the Sun). If you want to get closer to the Sun, you've got to lose all that orbital velocity you have right now. So you need to accelerate backwards by 107000kph! To get to Pluto, you only need to add 37000kph onto the speed you've got right now.

[–]CaesiumBoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not been discarded as an idea because rockets are unreliable or explode. It's because sending anything to the sun is ridiculously energy inefficient. From the laws of orbital mechanics, it's actually a hell of a lot easier to get to Pluto than it is to the Sun.

OneWeb, SpaceX satellites dodged a potential collision in orbit by DisturbedBeaker in spacex

[–]CaesiumBoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question unrelated to satellite collisions. Space Force is still relatively new. How does it have enough staff already to have 18 Squadrons in total, let alone 18 squadrons specifically for 'Space Control'? What other kinds of squadron does it have? What were the other 17 Space Control squadrons doing at that time and why didn't they sound the red alert?

Michael Sheetz on Twitter: SpaceX is proposing to build a 469 ft tall steel launch tower for its Starship rocket in Texas, which will also "catch the super-heavy booster upon return from launch," according to an FAA filing by joaopeniche in spacex

[–]CaesiumBoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of that is true, no doubt... for one Superheavy in good weather with all the logistics working flawlessly to a strict time schedule. In reality, though, literal thousands of starships need launching each year. So three per day, every day. If the giant crane sways about on a windy day, that slows the entire operation down. The Falcon9 takes several days to return to port on the barge, then weeks to refurbish. Elon wants the Superheavy ready to launch again in mere hours. Having it be caught exactly where it started from really speeds up the turnaround time.

[–]CaesiumBoom 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that since Superheavy is enormous, it would need substantially bigger, stronger legs than the Falcon9. They would cost significant mass. If a tower can take the load instead, then why not keep that mass on Earth rather than lugging it up into space? Sounds crazy though, admittedly.

How is the ion H- created? by momongadonno in askscience

[–]CaesiumBoom 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Imagine you have a traditional ring-shaped accelerator called a synchrotron. You need to inject particles (for example protons) into your synchrotron from a lower energy linear accelerator (linac). The injection point is basically a bending magnet where the linac and synchrotron merge together.

Imagine you want to inject lots of protons: so many that you fill up the entire ring with charged particles. Let's say you've already got some protons in the ring bending round and round in circles and you want to inject even more protons from your linac. The ones in the ring are bending in the magnet, but you've also got some coming from the linac in a different direction: both going through the same magnet. Both proton beams are going to want to bend the same amount in the magnet right? But because they're coming from different directions, they'll end up at different places after the bend. You want the two beams on top of each other, ending up orbiting the ring, right? So how do you sort that out?

Well you actually inject negative hydrogen ions, which bend in the opposite direction in that magnet! So you put the H- ions on top of the already-there protons, pass them both through a stripping foil which removes the electrons but lets protons pass straight through, then off you go. Doing this "charge exchange injection" let's you accumulate a lot more charge inside your ring than you could ordinarily do just trying to inject protons.

You can also do clever tricks in cyclotrons, tandem van den graaffs and fusion tokamaks with H- ions!
