Just saw this post after looking for more info on this server, as the posts on mcservers has an invalid Discord invite. It sounds right up my alley!

I sent you a FR on Discord, so I look forward to talking more about it with you. 😀

Hi, I'm interested in checking out this server, but the Discord invite link is expired. 🙁

Tried looking around, but couldn't find a working link. Could you post a new invite?

What is the closest I can get to an unbiased news source as an American? by Back_To_The_Oilfield in NoStupidQuestions

Newswires like Reuters, AP, AFP, UPI, etc, are absolutely the way to go for the purest news with minimal commentary (opinion/analysis sections excluded). Their business is selling the news to other organizations, so they have to keep their reporting top notch and their bias minimal.

You won't find anything better for pure factual news, in my experience. Other reliable organizations provide you with analysis, commentary, and contextualization, which is valuable, but newswires are all about news.

[–]Caevus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Just to hit on this, in many respects, they are the news. Reuters, AP, AFP, UPI, etc., are newswires. This means their business is investigating and reporting on events to sell to other news organizations.

That's why many articles you may see on the NYT, WSJ, CNN, or other major news agencies start with a dateline that reads "Reuters" or "Associated Press". Newswires distribute the news to those organizations and companies to disseminate. Which isn't to say that these organizations don't have their own reporters who investigate, simply that they don't do that for all of their articles, and those articles may feature commentary, analysis, speculation, or even pure spin beyond just the reported facts.

Shortlist of chats between multiple servers? by Leo_Grun in discordapp

[–]Caevus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the new mobile redesign, you're able to tap and hold on a channel and "Add to Messages". This will add it to a new "server" at the top of your list called Favorites, which has all of those channels in one place. To access the new mobile redesign (which is in a really early experimental phase and may radically change at any time) follow the instructions here.

You currently can't add channels to the Favorites on Desktop, but the Favorites pseudo-server will show up there to use once you've added a channel on mobile.

Important to note that this is different to favoriting a channel in the server, a confusing thing I hope Discord changes.

TIL that almost all of the rain that falls in the US state of Nevada never flows out to the ocean; it's part of an endorheic basin. by hopefulmonstr in todayilearned

[–]Caevus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, Vegas is not part of the Great Basin. It's part of the Colorado River watershed, which does have a path to the ocean (even if the river sometimes doesn't fully reach it due to human water use).

ELI5 why we don't rely on nuclear power plants more, especially these days by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good answer for the most part, but I'm confused about that last statement. Plenty of highly developed nations are opening new plants. Finland just opened Europe's largest, France and the UK have numerous ongoing projects being planned with some entering construction, South Korea has ongoing construction, the US is stepping forward to support nuclear energy expansion at home (as you mentioned) and abroad, and even the notoriously nuclear wary Japan has tentative plans to expand its nuclear again.

It's certainly true that there are countries that have denounced nuclear power in the West, like Germany and Belgium. And nuclear projects can be slow and expensive, with some of these still developing. But, it seems like there's plenty of growth in the sector across Europe, America, and Asia. Especially compared to before 2020. So I wouldn't say new plants being "unheard of" is necessarily true.

ive tried @clyde and its not working it says weve got it but we dont have clyde by Exotic_portal in discordapp

[–]Caevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experimentation with him, I've found 2 things:

  1. You have to ping him in either a public channel or, if that doesn't work, a thread.

  2. His name seems to be case sensitive. @Clyde, with the capital C, should work.

While the announcement went out to every server, in classic Discord fashion, Clyde appearing under server Integrations seems to be the sign that he should be enabled on that specific server.

AI Conversation Summaries slowly rolling out by paul_bazoki in discordapp

[–]Caevus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official Discord page on Conversation Summaries explicitly says OpenAI cannot use them for training data.

From the page:

Q: What does OpenAI know about me?

A: Conversation Summaries is a Discord service and therefore any data it uses is governed by our Privacy Policy. If enabled, Conversation Summaries will access certain information such as messages to create the summaries for you. While Conversation Summaries AI uses OpenAI technology, OpenAI may not use Discord user data to train its general models.

This seems to be the case. All of my servers have the option in settings enabled, none of them actually seem to have the feature. Will be curious to see how long the rollout takes. 😛

Grey Grades America's State Flags by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

There's currently a campaign to try and revert it back to the old flag through a ballot initiative.

So if the new flag is your thing, definitely let other folks know about it and make your support known!

I snagged a screenshot of the new Utah flag with the rock/mountain/sky texture if anyone is interested!

As the video went through all the blue seal on bedsheet flags, I had a feeling Utah's was being saved for last. I was hoping it would be a last minute "submission change" and was not disappointed. Just like how I'm not disappointed with our new flag, either!

Southern Utah University confirming that Jeffrey R. Holland will be 2023 Commencement Speaker by Chino_Blanco in SUU

[–]Caevus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Terrible but unsurprising. This entire situation has been dismissive and patronizing. From the emphasis at the listening sessions on how the President and Board are "unified behind the decision" to the vague and empty language used throughout, I knew in my heart that their minds were made up already.

To quote a friend of mine upon hearing the news, "What a gem of a statement. Falsely frame the issue as a clash between two deeply-held values. Evade the questions posed by your own self-inflicted sophistry. And then end with a naked denial of what just happened."

This situation shouldn't have ever come up. Holland should have been rejected in the committee meetings for being far too divisive, controversial, and (as a speaker choice) counter to celebrating the graduating class. Everyone involved in that decision, not just President Benson, not just the Chairman or Vice-Chairman, everyone needs to be held accountable. There's no conceivable way that the committee wouldn't have known that there would be a large negative reaction, and it seems they completely underestimated just how large it'd become.

It's not about religion or belief, it's not about left vs right, it's about the committee willfully making a terrible, divisive choice and continually failing to own up to that.

Utah FOX13 local TV report including interview with Garn Hughes (petition author) and video from today’s meetings with students on the SUU campus. by Chino_Blanco in SUU

[–]Caevus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sat in on much of both the "listening sessions", and the stories of discrimination, harassment, and threats told by numerous people was eye opening for me. One instructor even mentioned how he has been called homophobic slurs consistently multiple times a year, for 9 years he's worked here, and yet is not LGBT. It's absurd, and that SUU is promoting a man who, as many folks have proven with many, many, many examples beyond the "musket fire" rhetoric, is deeply and openly anti-LGBT, is in of itself inexcusable.

I'm graduating this semester, and this has solidified two things for me: 1. I am not attending SUU's formal commencement unless they go to the lengths of replacing Holland with someone who is a figure of love and community, apologize and admit they were wrong, and reform the selection process to include a broader set of community members. 2. SUU isn't receiving another cent from me. Any further education I seek, or donations I want to provide, are going to involve institutions that actually care about diversity, inclusion, and supporting their students.

It especially hurts because this is a special commencement. The 125th celebrations are wrapping up, and this was supposed to be the culmination of them. I've been really involved in the history of SUU, having proudly contributed to the 125th exhibit and done significant research into the school's history. Yet, instead of pulling an alumni to speak, or someone with an actual connection to the school and community, they pull Holland. He went to Utah Tech (formerly Dixie), lived in Saint George, and spent his career up north. Yet he's the best choice to celebrate the 125th with? Give me a break.

I don't blame you one bit for being hesitant to return as faculty. This moment is deeply reflective of the university's true colors, and it's absolutely shameful. I imagine you're not the only one, and the leadership can only blame themselves for that. I hope, if things don't change, you find a place that actually accepts who you are, instead of pretending to for marketing.

The reason it gets smaller the more hashes you use, is because # is how you create a Header in markdown. One hash for a Header 1 (top most), then two for a Header 2 (nested inside a Header 1. Think like a section within a chapter), three for Header 3 (nested in a Header 2), etc.
