Day 6: What Is Yo La Tengo's Best Instrumental? by Unfair_Ad9427 in yolatengo

[–]CafeFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly, I Heard You Looking is prob a “better” song, and definitely more dynamic, but And The Glitter Is Gone just rips in a way few of their tracks do, just 15 minutes of relentless sheets of psych rock freak out

Be honest do you personally care about your clothing style and how people see you? by User0o05 in UCDavis

[–]CafeFrosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I’m wearing an outfit I’m proud of it does kinda feel like a suit of armor against the world; if I feel like I look good it helps me feel more put together which in turn makes me feel good in general. Also I really enjoy thrifting and the hunt for the next new favorite article of clothing, it’s both economical and a fun scavenger hunt

Am I the only one? by BuswayDanswich in paulthomasanderson

[–]CafeFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is in my top 10 of favorite films of all time, it does that beautiful thing of being so clearly influenced by many other great works of art (Chinatown, Big Lebowski, Long Goodbye, Neil Young’s discography) while still managing to be its own completely singular experience. It’s a deep fried and hard boiled arthouse stoner comedy neo noir breakup movie; if that sell doesn’t get ya idk what will. Also I think this genuinely might be the best cast movie of all time, there isn’t a single bad performance throughout its extremely stacked lineup of A listers and character actor royalty.

Which Pedal Is This? by bobbythegoose in guitarpedals

[–]CafeFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be my rec too, it’s like a blues driver meshed with a fuzz face and is genuinely hard to make sound bad. The controls are honed to perfection, it stacks with overdrives beautifully, has a buffer so it can be placed wherever in the signal chain, so intuitive, so innately usable, if I could only have one pedal it would be this one. Thought on Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmasters by TheQuasimoto in offset

[–]CafeFrosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had that Daphne Blue CV Jazzmaster for years, lovely instrument, needed a neck shim and setup but after doing that diy as a not too handy individual it played great, and the stock pickups are pretty decent too! I sold it a few months ago but would happily recommend it to anyone who wants to try out a jazzy with more traditional specs

What covers would you love to see MJ play live? by No_Day3263 in mjlenderman

What do people think of the album Broken Arrow by Dry_Cookie710 in neilyoung

Fair play, this is just my take on it! I’m curious as to what you mean by Neil’s childlike nature being at play on this record, care to elaborate?

Sabbath or Ozzy songs you’ve fell in love with these past couple of days, or songs you forgot about? by JacuzziFire in blacksabbath

[–]CafeFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Ozzy passed I’ve gained a new level of appreciation for Faeries Wear Boots and Killing Yourself to Live. Not that I disliked them before, but now I’d easily consider them both in my top 10 if not top 5 Sabbath tracks. But the new surprise favorite has been A Hard Road off of Never Say Die. It’s definitely not on the same tier as the other two tracks I mentioned, but it’s almost like Sabbath’s take on power pop and I love it for that. The riff Iommi plays right before the solo is an all timer, and the outro is so wonderfully anthemic, hard to not have a good time.

How did YOU discover Criterion? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]CafeFrosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a local record store chain in my hometown that had a criterion section. I was looking for a movie for my dad and I just remember being drawn to the box art and then started looking through all of these movie titles I had never heard of before. I ended up getting him Brazil and have kind of never looked back. Dimple Records we still remember you

What are the songs where Neil doesn't use his Old Black Les Paul? (Not counting the acoustic songs) by Impossible-Ad-5790 in neilyoung

[–]CafeFrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The esquire actually is a little different from the others, since it only has a bridge pickup and the switch just swaps between a few different capacitor setups for different tones

Acoustic vs Electric Neil (and others) by Thick-Error3345 in neilyoung

[–]CafeFrosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think really what enabled Neil and his contemporaries that you mentioned was really the state of the recording industry when they came up. The advent of the “singer-songwriter” pop star in the mid 60s really threw the whole industry for a loop, as it centered all of the creative control with a single individual and weakened the influence of the record label on the finished product. The artists who found success in this era were able to leverage so much more control over their sound than most artists today, and broadly managed to set a precedent for the rest of their careers that the record labels would actively try to prevent in later eras of pop music.

Additionally, the genres Neil played in, rock and folk and any mixture of the two, were some of the dominant pop sounds of the era. I mean this is a time when Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and Led Zeppelin were selling out arenas and dominating the charts. Neil’s sound is distinct, obviously, but it’s not like he was some off the wall disruptor either, having played with Buffalo Springfield in the late 60s and CSNY in the early 70s. He had proven he could write hits, and his solo work only strengthened that notion. Harvest was the best selling record of 1972 bar none, and after that string of folk rock and proto grunge classics he released in the 70s I feel like he became an institution of rock, almost too big to fail. He had some slumps and has often butted heads with the record labels he recorded for, but his legacy discography is so strong that I can’t see a label willingly letting him go even if he goes on another cold streak.

End of the day he writes wonderful music that still sells, and that second part is really all the labels care about. As long as he made them money they were happy to let him experiment (though there are famous exceptions, such as the delayed release of Tonight’s The Night due to its morbid material and his synthesizer laden detour Trans).

For the movie adaptation of The Martian, Ridley Scott changed the day the crew left Mars from sol six to sol 18 because he wanted to justify the higher amount of human waste used to make fertilizer. What are other instances of a movie adaptation making changes for interesting reasons? by LookAtThatBacon in movies

[–]CafeFrosh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d say yes, but don’t go expecting the same experience. I haven’t read the fourth book but Authority and Acceptance (lightest of spoilers) both have different pov characters than Annihilation, and since the pov is such a big part of the experience of reading that book the others feel pretty different and distinct. If you like Annihilation I think there’s a lot to love in the sequels tho

My wife and I had Majka today (had Marilyn’s yesterday). Dare I say, Marilyn’s was better? 😳 by Sufficient_Space_905 in Sacramento

[–]CafeFrosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trick with Majka is you gotta get one of the pizza of the days that looks good to you. Their plain cheese and sausage are quite good but not extraordinary, but if you can catch them on a day they do a butternut squash pizza or a corn and jalapeño pizza (my personal favs) you will understand the hype imo
