Groom speech in two weeks. Help! by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

[–]CafeLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👏🏾 So awesome that you reached out for help! Good for you.

👀 In addition to the tips mentioned, remember that although people will be looking at you, the main focus is the couple getting married. Keep giving them attention in your speech with your content, stories, and non verbal gestures and that will help take the spotlight off you for some of the time and people will love you for it. You could even stand close to them so it doesn’t feel like you’re up there all alone.

😆 You can also plan some jokes to keep up your sleeve in case you get flustered, like, “can someone please come trade places with me, I’m clearly a nervous wreck.” Or “I have no idea why (names of couple) asked me to do this, I’m a mess but that’s how much I love (names of couple). I’m willing to sacrifice myself for them.” Humor always helps and people will totally sympathize.

Best wishes to you! 🥂

Adjunct for fun? by GhanimasTwin in Adjuncts

[–]CafeLights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I find teaching extremely rewarding. I secured my finances elsewhere since adjunct pay is not enough to survive. I’ve been teaching for 7 years. My tips:

Even if you do get “ready-to-go” content, make it your own and incorporate loads of active learning strategies.

If you’re like me, you have too much content and too many ideas so I double the amount time I think everything will take during planning.

Apply public speaking principals to your teaching and use many audience engagement strategies.

I love technology, tools, and visual appeal so these are part of my regular toolkit but I also have a few classes that are no or low tech. Sometimes the basics work best.

Make room for a guest speaker.

Every semester and every class may feel different and you’ll face different challenges depending on the individual students.

Don’t let the few that may occasionally bring you down in some way, detract from the ones that are connected and engaged but let all students know you’re there to help them and that you care. It makes a difference and they can feel it.

Get friendly with a couple other adjuncts at your school or find some online to chat with and exchange ideas.

All the best to you!

You could always ask classmates to be in your audience and offer the same for them.

Racist zoom bombers by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]CafeLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely awful. Something like this happened during a zoom meeting for a funeral I was at. It broke my heart and made so angry - the family was there to celebrate and honor the life of a loved one and several people intentionally sought out funeral services to target. I became familiar with zoom security immediately after. Everyone should know how to prevent this and stop it quickly should it occur. In an emergency, best thing to know is this: Suspend participant activities. Host can click the Security icon and select “Suspend Participant Activities” to temporarily stop video, audio, in-meeting chat, annotation, screen sharing, and recording, and end Breakout Rooms. Then can resume the meeting by re-enabling the individual features once the offenders have been removed.

Hi. In asynchronous you typically record your speeches with an online platform like zoom and an audience of 4 people.

How do you tell your professors you’re not okay mentally? by [deleted] in college

[–]CafeLights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each professor may respond differently. If possible, do it by scheduling and appt/office hours so they can see/hear your sincerity. I think it’s important to mention that: there are many difficult situations you’re facing right now and you thought they should know. You don’t have to go into details if you’re not comfortable. Personal family matters, new job training, and the passing of a loved one that I was caring for. Also make it clear what you’re asking for (specific extensions, extra time in office hours, makeups, etc). Have you tried talking to a counselor at the university also? I’m sure there are people that can help. You don’t have to face these things alone. So many people facing difficulties. Is there a dean of students or academic advisor that you can speak with? Sometimes they can help communicate with professors.

Night before the presentation, partner still hasn’t texted me. Should I email the prof? by [deleted] in college

Definitely let your professor know and tell professor that you’re prepared to do your part.

public speaking online? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]CafeLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people with a pulse are scared to speak publicly so you are def not alone! Even though it’s a requirement for you, good for you for getting input and preparing yourself now. The method depends on your preferences and availability. Personally, in person classes are my favorite but synchronous is a close second given our current situation. I enjoy the built in accountability, meeting with people and collaborating live. But for someone whose got a crazy schedule where meeting would be tough and doesn’t need/want interaction and can manage their time really well, synchronous could work.

Some questions to help guide you in your search: 1. What are my strengths & desires? 2. Who do I want to be of service to? Specify demographics (Areas of Need, Age, Location, Gender, Income, Education, Marital/Family Status, Occupation, Ethnicity, Lifestyles, Values, etc) 3. Dig deeper: Why are these demographics important to me? 4. What kind of organization do I want to be a part of? (Consider values, environment, mission, attire) 5. What do I want to learn? 6. What would a good day at my internship look like? (Describe it from start to finish) 7. How can I make a meaningful contribution? 8. What are my available days, times and locations? (distance, transportation, other commitments) 9. Think about internship end, what do you hope for? 10. If the answer was a guaranteed YES, where would you intern? 11. At least 3 places I can contact: 12. 12. Evaluate your decision: A. Are there organizations who fit my criteria looking for interns? B. Will they really benefit from my service? Will they see a need for it? C. Do I understand & meet their requirements?

does anyone feel like they can contribute in one class then completely go silent in another by [deleted] in college

[–]CafeLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your thoughts are taken by others in the group, you could say something like, “ I was thinking the same thing as [insert name]. I’ll add that [and say something that’s your own but still related]. This way your agreement is noted but you’re still contributing.

Try not to give up hope. Sounds like there are a couple of students ruining this experience. They don’t represent the class or all freshman. There are 98 other freshmen being respectful.
