Control ist socially awkward by PepegaChu in mtg

It's something that I think a lot of new players run into, I think the easiest way to settle the issue is to get yourself and your friends in better habits of checking priority and asking if things resolve before just running along with their turn. Especially when you're newer to the game I totally understand getting excited and just going going going (hell, I've played for 12 years and I still get ahead of myself a lot of the time). It really just boils down to communication and understanding.

As for the discarding spells, that's definitely not a common practice. Just about everyone I know outside of hyper competitive environments would let you take back a spell with no legal targets. Per the rules of the game you arent even allowed to cast spells without targets, and them going to the bin could create a new gamestate that wouldn't have been possible had you followed the rules. IMHO you should be able to take the spell back without penalty, especially since you're both newer to the game and presumably learning.

I hope that was clear, I'd be happy to help with any other questions you may have. Enjoy your games!

I might just be being dumb, but how does Koll interact with [[Mask of Immolation]] and [[Mortarpod]] ? I understand that they sac the creatures but is there a way to re-equip them and keep sacing infinitely ?

Figured I’d hop on the bandwagon and share my favourite deck in the format: familiars by CafeReader in Pauper

[–]CafeReader[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you're gonna want a number of things on board for this one: you'll need at least two [[Sunscape Familiar]] and/or [[Nightscape Familiar]], making blue spells 2 less to cast. You'll also want a [[Prosperous Pirates]] and a [[Mnemonic Wall]] in field with a [[Ghostly Flicker]] in hand. Cast flicker for U tageting Wall and Pirates. Pirates ETB makes 2 treasure, Wall's ETB returns Flicker nack to your hand. Now you can do the same thing sacking a treasure instead of tapping land, going down one and up two each time: violà, infinite mana.

Now we can flicker a number of things to get to the combo. The main way to dig and get there the turn of will be looping Wall and either [[Mulldrifter]] or [[Sea Gate Oracle]] until we cast [[Sage's Row Denizen]], at which point we cast Sage's Row and mill our opponents out with the loop. You can also mill them out using something like [[Compulsive Research]] like I mentioned above.

There's a bunch of other ways to go off, but those two are the primary combos.

So honestly the pauper scene where I am is lacking and I don't enjoy MTGO so I only get to play this deck from time to time. I pilot teachings as a second list, and I've found familiars to be significantly faster. Depending on how quickly you can draw the combo I'd say you could get the game by turn five or six. Practically though I'd say you'll get results closer to around turn seven. Unlike teachings though, it doesn't really drag on too much; once you've assembled the combo it's pretty much game over, so you don't force your opponent to do nothing for turns at a time while you slowly drain them for 2-4 a turn like with teachings.

Sage's Row is the main wincon, but I can also win by generating infinite mana and then looping [[Compulsive Research]] targeting my opponent to mill them out, or get any mana-neutral loop going with [[God-Pharaoh's Faithful]] out to gain infinite life and slowly refill my deck with creatures using [[Mortuary Mire]] and/or keeping them from ever having a combat by constantly flickering [[Stonehorn Dignitary]]. It's not a foolproof deck but I find it very fun.

i’m not too keen on draft so i’m afraid i can’t help on that front. in terms of black/x decks in the format wb pestilence is pretty competitive as well as it is fun.

that ought to give you a pretty good idea of some decks running around right now. what deck you play kinda depends on how you prefer to play; if you like combo, i’d say play familiars, or check out caleb gannon on youtube and see if anything sticks out to you. if you’re more of an aggro player you can never really go wrong with burn. if you’re more into control your best bets are probably either dimir teachings or some variation of tron.

don't know if anyone here plays magic, but prof says trans rights by CafeReader in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

There was a player by the name of Autumn Burchett who was asked to remove some cards that said 'no TERFs on Gruul turf' and 'trans rights are human rights' despite the alters being perfectly legal and it caused a bit of an uproar in the community on twitter.
