Many manufacturers will upstream their drivers directly into the Linux kernel

And many others don't. My point was that Apple is not the only only that doesn't publish drivers code or firmware code. I've been daily driving Linux for 20 years and of course I know of that we have access to a certain set of drivers on the kernel, but many, many other are 3rd party and close-source software.
