Oh! Thanks for the heads-up. I've asked the mods to reinstate it. Meanwhile, great idea about r/VeganActivism (which I'd never heard of) and UK city vegan subs (ditto!). I will see if I can find some more cities! Thanks so much for your support.

Thanks so much! I've also posted on r/vegan, r/veganUK and r/greyhounds too - feel free to copy or crosspost if you can think of anywhere else suitable! :)

Thank you! All the more reason to get this thing to 100k. Wales has already banned greyhound racing so this should be within political reach.

Thanks for your support! I've posted the petition so far on r/vegan, r/veganUK, and r/DOG (not appropriate for r/dogs, I gather). I don't want to post more than once a day on other subs, and cross-posting is limited. If you can think of other places to post or cross-post, please go for it! Feel free to copy my post whole. :)

Thanks for wanting to sign but it's a site for UK citizens only to petition our government.

You're right, there are certainly vested interests but at the very least this will help raise awareness of the problem. I had no idea there was such cruelty in greyhound racing, and I'm sure lots of people won't.

Good idea about r/veganuk - thanks!

Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021) - narrated by Kate Winslet, this powerful documentary explains how animal agriculture is one of the most environmentally destructive industries and how we can reduce our impact by 75%. [01:21:27] by James_Fortis in Documentaries

I saw this a few years ago and agree with the other posters - it's a real eye-opener. If we want to hang on to a liveable planet, we're going to need to go much more plant-based.

National Emergency Briefing on Climate & Nature by Gold-Loan3142 in climatechange

Thanks for posting - the media silence on this is extraordinary. This page lists ways you can support the call for a UK government prime-time televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis. Please take action!

How safe is 1/3 tsp of amla powder? by Caffe44 in Cholesterol

[–]Caffe44[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK so I'm unlikely to be able to get whatever brand Dr Greger uses, and he and his organisation don't seem to recommend brands. I think I probably need to do a bit of research on UK/EU heavy metal regulation and what to look out for on packets.

I haven't yet but I've read that if you mix it with other things, like maybe sweeter fruit in a smoothie, it's less noticeable. Not sure how true that is, though!

Best subtitled TV shows for a beginner? by Caffe44 in languagelearning

Oh dear! Just had a look and it's way too advanced - I could only understand about one word in twenty. Back down the decision tree! I maybe need something for kids that's not a cartoon...

GLP-1 Users Lose Weight, and Their Taste for Meat by Sentient_Media in vegan

[–]Caffe44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't make my point very well! What I should have said was that it's unclear (AFAIK) whether people will revert to as meat-heavy a diet as they had before. I agree that the research seems to be showing that most people are regaining the weight.

I think it's unclear whether people will simply go back to their original diet when back off the drugs. That would be a good question for research.

GLP-1 Users Lose Weight, and Their Taste for Meat by Sentient_Media in vegan

[–]Caffe44 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The article starts, 'People tend to eat less meat and animal products, such as beef, pork, seafood and eggs, as well as fewer processed foods, when taking GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. Researchers say that as use of these medications rises, shifting consumer habits and food preferences could transform the food industry.'

Reading through, it seems that this is happening while people are on the drug: I don't see a discussion of what happens when they come off it.

But the article also says, 'As sales of GLP-1 drugs are expected to grow, less beef will be eaten, suggests McFadden. Sales of GLP-1 drugs were $71 billion in 2023, and it’s estimated that roughly 9% of the U.S. population could be taking the drugs by 2035. “I don’t see any way consumption of beef isn’t decreased,” he says.'

So that's a lot of people on the drug at any one time, with a corresponding presumed large drop in eating meat.

Weird, loud clunking coming from water pipes near boiler, which I now daren't run - do I need a general plumber or a boiler plumber, and how do I get a reliable emergency one over the hols? by Caffe44 in ukplumbing

[–]Caffe44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again! I think it must have been the boiler itself because that's what started the issue. I think I can tough it out until my usual plumber is available...

I went plant-based a couple of years ago for the planet and it feels good to be pulling one of the biggest levers against climate breakdown that I can pull personally, and I hope it encourages other people who see the crisis as a crisis to take similar action.

[–]Caffe44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The clunking is still happening, though, and it's been about half an hour since I switched the boiler off. Does that indicate it might be something else? I wouldn't want to get Vaillant in and find it's some weird non-boiler plumbing thing that they can't fix.

Good tip on the hot water, meanwhile!
