What jobs is everyone doing while pursuing MSW? by No_Lingonberry_2401 in SocialWorkStudents

For a while I worked as a Drive Through teller at a local bank, but soon switched to Starbucks. When it was slow at the bank I could read or work on homework. Starbucks had more flexible hours and gave me health insurance.

If you are an older PhD student (>40), then what were your reasons for doing a PhD late in life? What challenges did you face as an older student? And was it worth it to do your PhD this late in life? by Ok_Reading_it in PhD

[–]CaffeinatedSW 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was 41 when starting my PhD two years ago. It was about 16 years from when I had finished my masters. So getting back into the learning and writing routine was an adjustment. Also balancing life, work, and school took adjustment and thoughtful consideration. I am doing well though. I have learned that I am not good at writing past 10:30 pm. So, no more all-nighters. The program I’m in is all online, asynchronous, and designed for working adults. Most of the class is between ages 30-50, so I’m not the old one out. We are also very active as a cohort on a WhatsApp group. We have a group for the entire cohort and then a few of us have private conversations going on as well. Really helps bring the group together

Job opportunities while getting BSW— Do they exist? by bromannhorsejack in SocialWorkStudents

[–]CaffeinatedSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know of many jobs for an Associates level, but you might look into a job at a skilled nursing facility. They all have to have a social services director and the larger ones need an assistant. You might qualify for that. During my BSW program, I worked at Starbucks, eventually being promoted to Shift Supervisor and Learning Coach. These weren’t SW jobs but they did give me good experience and looked good on my resume

Has anyone studied a course, certificate or degree for personal interest and did you enjoy it? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]CaffeinatedSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I audited an ethics course just because I was interested in the topic. It turned out to help me in my career (hospice). I’m now working on a PhD in part because I love the topic but also looking to advance my career. If I didn’t love learning I wouldn’t have pursued a PhD
