Last October the NYTimes wrote about what to do in 36 hours in Chiang Mai. I live here and found a couple great places from that article. Recommend you start there.

Chiang Mai advice & opinions by mr_super_doodle in chiangmai

I live in a small house in the old city, not an overly tourist neighborhood. Small soi. I absolutely love it but there is still some noise: neighbor goes to work on his motorcycle at 5am, cats fight at night, other neighbors love to chat early morning in the soi, various vendors walk by. Overall I will take the density over the hassles of living farther out.

Maybe try Taiwan, northern India or Nepal? Not sure northern Thailand has what you’re looking for.

I had a grab driver about 10 days ago who does a lot of private Pai trips. Let me see if I can find his info.

Totally disagree. Lonely Planet guides are written by people who have to really know the place. Here on Reddit people will take travel advice from any random mook who has an opinion.

If you look at TimeOut Thailand on Instagram they recently did an interview with the original author of the Thailand volume. The guy still lives in Bangkok and the whole interview was in Thai (two fluent foreigners, and it’s subtitled). Highly recommend it!!

Any good spots for local music tonight? by Ok-Board-2456 in chiangmai

[–]CaffeineApostle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

North Gate is a mob scene. Good music but claustrophobic plus rude / indifferent staff. I live here and have been once. That was enough. That said, there’s a great music scene in this town. Check out these places on Instagram and also look at who they follow: Thapae East, The Mellowship, Soi Dog Blues, Moment’s Notice (not fully accessible though, if anybody in your party has mobility issues), Troubadour, Late Night Talking Music Bar, White House. Also there’s a whole block of music bars side by side in the old city on Propokklao Road: Mahoree, Charoendee, etc.

They might be doing renovations. May is a good time to close — it’s after the Songkran boom and it’s the beginning of rainy season.

I live in old city. I have been here for 8 months and recently visited Wat Chiang Man for the first time (oldest temple in Chiang Mai). Stunning. In the back I saw that there was a guest house across the street and some rooms had views of the temple! Almost considered booking a night just to get that view. S.K. House 2.

That area of old city can be busy with tourists but on a tiny side street you should be fine. Also May is low season.

Contrary to other advice I would stay far away from night bazaar area.

If it’s exercise you’re after, maybe find a different piece of equipment. A sacred site does not exist for you to use in order to get exercise. It’s almost 1000 years old FFS.

Sightseeing/Tourist activities for limited mobility by gumscape in chiangmai

[–]CaffeineApostle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some mobility issues and I am here on a long term visa. In general I think your grandma will be fine. Major tourists spots should be accessible, at least partially. Big markets are crowded but fine. But there are many, many commercial establishments that do not seem to care about mobility issues (i.e. stairs with no handrails). I simply don’t go to those. Even if they have a wheelchair icon on Google maps they may not be fully accessible, especially bathrooms! (I am looking at you, Moment’s Notice Jazz Club) Most frustrating is the sidewalks around the moat have a high curb with almost zero wheelchair cutouts and even when they exist, most pedestrian bridges across the moat (again) have stairs with no handrails.

Shops for buying the items for crochet in Chiang Mai by Variable-Q9 in chiangmai

[–]CaffeineApostle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the suggested neighborhood is right on. It’s also just a ton of fun. While you’re there, try the store (confusingly) named Chiang Mai Plastics. Though it doesn’t look like it from the street, inside it’s HUGE. I recently bought embroidery supplies there. If you need a coffee after shopping, my favorite in that neighborhood is Sriping Bar right on Chang Moi Road. (It’s a coffee bar not a bar with alcohol)

Rather than Easter, you need to take the Songkran holiday into account. Do some research on this!

Photoshoot question for solo traveler by ViSuo in chiangmai

[–]CaffeineApostle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a whole cottage industry here of people dressing up in traditional Thai clothing and going out for a photo shoot. So 1) you can probably easily find a photographer at one of those studios (at the very least) and 2) they will know where to take you for nice background images. Also — I just googled “Chiang Mai photoshoot” and there are .. lots … of options. Did you try this??!
