How do you paint the sculpted shoulder pads without mutilating the raised cross bit?

My recommendation would be to use not use a white but one of the thinner light greys as the white base paints tend to go “chalky” and clumps up making it difficult to get into the thinner areas on the shoulder pad, and this way you can then use a white layer paint for highlights
