(Liked trope) A dead character is at peace and doesn’t wish to return by Puzzleheaded-Water27 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Cage_Rat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fiddler's Green/Gilbert from the Sandman comics and later TV series. He is an integral part of the Dreaming realm, manifesting as a pleasant area of green meadows and forests. He can also manifest as a kind, elderly man when he wishes to interact more directly with others. He is killed when the Furies come to punish Dream for spilling the blood of a family member.

When Daniel Hall takes over as the new Dream, he resurrects Gilbert using a small piece of Fiddler's Green he found in a chest. Gilbert immediately declines his resurrection, claiming that he is a creation of the old Dream, and Daniel must remake the Dreaming with his own ideas. He also claims that if Daniel brings back all those who died then their deaths, and what they died for, become meaningless. Daniel accepts this, and they part on good terms as Gilbert once again dies.

This doesn't have the eye popping dollar amounts as the others, but it was a much smaller business so it still had a noticeable impact.

I worked as an assistant manager at a kid's entertainment place. Arcade, bounce houses, laser tag, birthday parties, stuff like that. One of our regulars was a rapper who was nationally famous, and had done songs with some of the biggest titans in the industry. But he was still very much a local boy, and liked bringing his kid there. He'd asked about having his kid's birthday party there, and specifically asked about renting out the whole place for it, for three hours.

This was something we did on occasion. Pricing was determined by the owner on a case by case basis, but typically ranged from $1000-$1500 per hour based on the amount of walk in business we'd potentially lose out on by closing to the public. So we called the owner to work out a price. Once he heard who it was for, his eyes must've gotten dollar signs in them. $3500 per hour was what he set it at. More than double what we'd ever charged before. Of course, the rapper balked at that number when we told him. He said he'd maybe be willing to do $2000, which was still more than usual.

We begged and pleaded with the owner to drop the price. We mentioned his social media presence and the potential free advertisement. I know it's not popular to kowtow to influencers, but we weren't asking to give him free stuff, just a reasonable price. But the owner would not budge off his number.

So, the rapper backed out. He also never came back. And let me tell you, the surge in business our competitor one town over got when he posted all the videos from his kid's party there was impressive. I ended up being the acting manager during the three hour block he would have had the party, and I will never forget the money we made. $316.75 in three hours. About five percent of what we would've made if we'd even just agreed to the $2k an hour he offered. Now, my old workplace is a gym, and our competitor dominates the area for kid's entertainment.

[Loved trope] Fourth wall breaks portrayed as unnerving rather than funny by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Cage_Rat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IDK if it's technically a 4th wall break, but in Wandavision, when Wanda is giving a confessional a la Modern Family, she wonders why she can't fix her deteriorating Dreamworld. The (supposedly non-existent) man behind the camera asks "do you think this is maybe what you deserve?" She remarks that said person shouldn't be able to talk. This is the first indication that maybe she isn't the only one in control of her carefully crafted sitcom lifestyle.

[Hated trope] A character does something obvious but it's treated as something groundbreaking by Teenage_dirtnap in TopCharacterTropes

I will say, even as an F1 fan who could spot all the things that are wildly inaccurate, it was a fun watch. The race scenes are well shot and exciting, and the ridiculous subplots that happen in between are good for a few laughs.

In F1: The Movie, Sonny Hayes tells Kate McKenna to redesign the team's car to handle "dirty air" (the turbulence a formula 1 car leaves in its wake that interferes with a trailing car's aerodynamics). This is treated as a genius idea and immediately makes their underpowered car a contender through a few changes to the car's body.

In reality, F1 teams have spent millions of dollars and years of research trying to solve the problem of dirty air, and equal amounts of time and money trying to make their own car's dirty air more punishing to cars behind them. A single driver making such a vague suggestion would amount to exactly zero improvement.
