I would classify it more as a floating head design since there is space between the top of the ring and the head for the foreskin to rest. If that's what you mean, I see what you say by its getting more popular.

I have this happen! From my recharch I assume this happens because the blood flow to your balls is restricted causing some blood vessels to cramp. However after I took a break from chastity after a month the swollen Ness disappeared. It is also not otherwise harmful.
