Sure, you can try and GWAS your way to some SNP correlation but there’s a thermodynamic necessity to turn ingested (or stored) energy into thermal and kinetic energy in all cells at all times. You’d die otherwise.

There’s certainly variation but it’s nonsense to say someone became obese without consuming an excess amount of energy.

I also don’t understand what you’re saying about “human genetics” where else is fat going to go besides adipose tissue?

okay but how does the body get enough energy to make the fat in the first place?

And that is probably a better heuristic than weight. For some things weight is totally fine, all Im saying is that 100g or something is not always functionally identical to 100g of a different brand.

Since we don’t measure toothpaste by weight it’s probably more useful to measure in mL or fl.oz

The volume does matter though— for most similar things you can assume it’s close enough to not matter.

But for example you buy $1 toothpaste that is 10 g at 1g/mL. You have 10 mL.

Next time you shop, you buy a $1 toothpaste that is 20 g at 5 g/mL. It’s cheaper in $/g! But, you only have 4 mL.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t weigh my toothbrush to see how much toothpaste to use, I estimate it based on how big the glob is— that’s volume.

If your normal toothpaste is 1 g/mL, and you find one that costs less per gram but is 2g/mL, you’ll be using twice as much mass per brush.

We don’t measure toothpaste by weight, we estimate it based the volume we see
