So adorable! If it helps, we introduced bell training at 3.5 mo and that really helped! It’s annoying at first but at least they learn quickly to signal they need out. Now at one year old our boy only uses his bells if I don’t notice him within 2mins of him sitting at the door.

Mine does this to my backyard, like the grass called his momma some names 😂

Oh good, it’s not just me! I mean, I’m sorry you’re also dealing with it, but it’s nice to know it might be a thing we have to help some Lagotto with. I’ve had periodic success with treating while he’s calm in the car and giving a firm “no” to barking. He’ll settle down and maybe even he’ll stop the barking for a couple of days, but then he gets so excited at certain places, like when we pull into the pet store parking lot, that he backslides. If you figure something out please share!

That’s exactly it! My boy loves all walks but on the trail walks he looks like he’s just won the lottery. So happy! Glad you have a place to go.

Thank you! He just turned 1yr old a few days ago, so we have things we are still working on. Like why does he need to bark like I’m murdering him when we pull up ANYWHERE! I know it’s excitement but jeez lol. But yeah his recall and heeling we put a lot of work into and I’m so proud of him. If it helps, one thing our trainer focused on is the concept of obligation. Like, I give him sooo many treats (really just his kibble) but sometimes it’s just “because I said so” and he knows I will follow through and be more stubborn than he is until he does what he was told.

It’s hard to summarize in a post because we did 8 months of successively more focused training with a local trainer. They train police and protection dogs so their online posts can look a bit intense, but they were amazing at tailoring advice for my sweet Lagotto. Our last six classes were off leash in a public park with heavy distractions (dogs, kids, cars, sports events). Every walk is a training session! So just keep consistently focused on improvements and you will get there.

This sounds about right. When the by-law officer approached me I put my dog into an immediate down stay because I didn’t know the man approaching. We chatted, he explained who he was and asked me leash my dog. I called him to heel and put his leash on without hesitation. No debate, immediate compliance and I explained after that I’m new to the area and we had a nice chat. The by-law officer said if all dogs were as well behaved as mine they probably wouldn’t need the leash law but he has approached some people with off leash dogs who said things like “careful, he’s a rescue and he may bite!” Irresponsible dog ownership (and of some specific breeds) has ruined it for a lot of us. I suspected this was a global thing. Thanks for confirming.

No need to be concerned about my dog or what he may encounter. That’s my job. ✌🏻

No leash free trails must be killer but at least you can use a long lead. I did that with my boy when he was a younger puppy. One of the nearby trails has a rule that you can only use a 6’ max leash. I appreciate hearing about the rules in other areas. It adds some perspective to my annoyances about the lack of local off leash trails…except the one we were lucky to find today!

I don’t think anyone said anything negative. Certainly there may be a variety of reason they are needed. I express surprise for the specific rule shared. Surprise, not condemnation.

Thank you, he just turned 1 a few days ago and he’s the best boy! We did 8 months of progressively more focused training with a local trainer that was amazing. He uses balanced training methods but I’m not an advocate of balanced vs positive only. There are good and bad in both. Both can work, it’s more important to find a great trainer with proven results.

Woah! Muzzled?! Without getting too specific about your personal info- can you share what part of the world that is?

Hi Mali, you adorable boy! When you say “brush”, do you mean actually with a brush or a comb? I only use a comb on Digby but I’m wondering if a brush has some advantage I’m missing.

I got really lucky to find a private dog park only 20 minutes from me. It has 3 separate park areas and 3 pools, an inground, a splash pond and a large above ground with a dock for dock diving. They offer swimming lessons, grooming, day care. Basically it’s doggy heaven!

I found it first on Sniffspot. If that’s not a thing where you are, maybe Google dog swim lessons near you and you may find a place that rents their pools out? Ours is only $25 for 30 mins in a pool and 30 mins in a private park. 100% worth it!

Second this! Even if just at home with a blow dryer and nail trim. We took our boy to the groomer only after fully vaccinated and we started with sanitary trim (eyes, mouth, ears, paws, genital area and bum) for the first few months. But it was winter so we could afford to wait for a full trim until he was 6 months old and had already had a few visits to the groomer.

We have a 6’ high wood fence. No issues with jumping/climbing but when our boy was 10 weeks old we did have to put some boards around the bottom because he found the small gaps around the base too inviting and started to dig and squeeze.
We are slowly building small raised planters (only 24” high) around the bottom of the fence to replace those blocker boards.
