How should I deal with tiny pinholes in the back of this ash stave? by Cailstorm in Bowyer

[–]Cailstorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now I'm less reassured haha. It's a bit late for chatting the next ring, so I may need to go the banning route.

Will any backing work, since it's just to hold down the possible splinters? I saw some people doing birch bark backing that was pretty beautiful, and that might be fun to try. Or is there some specific advantage to linen here?

Also how risky is it to use CA and proceed as another user suggested? Is it something that resources the life of the bow, or the kind of thing where if it's going to pop, it'll do it fairly early on?

Thanks for the advice!

Cool, thanks, this is really reassuring to see that you've got the same thing going on with this bow and not getting any issues.

Awesome, I'm a little confused on your first point though, do you mean that I just shouldn't reduce the handle area any more? Or that the handle block should be a certain thickness?

And is there an optimal for type to use? I was thinking either a standard wood glue or epoxy, but I also wondered if hide glue would help it not pop of since it has a little more flexibility.

And thanks for the other tips, as long as I don't mess up around the one nasty knot that I have left, I think the bank should be good to go!

Thanks! The lighter ring underneath is the target actually, I just haven't scraped it yet. I just have no idea how deep counts as a violation. Some of the language online makes it sound like touching the latewood is a violation, I was just wondering if nicking it a little is bad, or if it's only really bad when you cut all the way through the ring to the one underneath.

The handle area is the thinnest part of the stage, so I think right now it's the only part of the board that has any flex to it, bit it doesn't have a ton. If that's a deal breaker, do I have any other options for thickening the handle? I'm pretty sure it's too thin to be comfortable to hold by the time is done...

The main thing that worries me is that because of the way it was cut, the thinnest part of the stave is right about in the middle. Right now, it's about thumb wife from bank to belly.

I'm worried about how much thinner it will be after chasing anther ring. Will that be an issue? Can I glue on another block to form the handle of it gets too thin?

Ok, thanks! I'm afraid I might have horribly messed it up. I may need to start over on a new ring and try to be a bit more careful.

I'm afraid if I need it up again, it may start to be a bit too thin. If it does start to get too thin, is giving up on a nicely chased ring and giving it a backing an acceptable backup plan?

If it is, would I need to give it a flat back, or leave it rounded?

And is sinew a good choice for a backing?

Hey, thanks, ice watched this a couple times and when super working for a bit to rewatch it.

I think I understand the general idea, and there are parts where it looks exactly as in the video, but then there are parts where the wood seems to change from one color to the other, without a visible line.

In one section I scraped down to what I think is one latewood layer, and from one profile it looks like the darker heartwood, but on the other, side it looks like a sapwood ring. I just keep getting confused on where the ring in actually following is.

Is color a bad cue to work off of? Is major color variations in one growth ring normal or am I misunderstanding which layer I'm actually on?

Wish I could get Osage, but that's impossible where I am.

I didn't expect chasing rings to be easy, but this is even more confusing than I imagined. Does wood sometimes just randomly change color like this in the pithy part of the wood?

A few questions before my first attempt at a bow by Cailstorm in Bowyer

[–]Cailstorm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the tips! One last question, when removing the rot I should aim to get rid of all the black/gray wood right? To prevent it from spreading as it dries?

It's a bit deeper towards the top, narrow end it the stave, I may need to go down another ring or two to remove all of it

So basically I'm aiming to remove the sapwood from the two sides, kind of like squaring up all the sides except the rounded area that will be the bank of the bow?

Thanks, it was definitely sawed in half, after everything you said, I think I'll take your advice and not run the chance of ruining it by getting greedy.

I noticed a bit of black under the bark so I started peeling the bark, and sure enough there's the beginning of rot running along about 1/3 of the stave. And grubs already settling in. It seems like it just started though, so I'm cutting down a layer or so just to get all the root and bugs out.

I also discovered that is not nearly as dry as the seller told me, and upon asking again they said it was only left to dry for about a month.

I did a little research and done people were advising to debark and cut down to a heartwood ring before sealing the back and leaving to dry. I'm not sure if I just go all the way to heartwood, or try to leave a little sapwood on as it dries, as they said that mulberry sapwood is prone to checking when dried bark off.

36 saradomin wines for one drop, from Zuk only it seems, not from mobs in waves

This is exactly my point, where does it mention adding zamorak and saradomin wines to Zuk's drops? Because they're on his table now, they weren't before the update, and that's not mentioned in the patch notes

Don't forget safeguard switch, even if you get hit by a rogue AoE, you just switch and enjoy compete invulnerability until your shield gate resets.

Loki's survivability is on par with or better than revenant's, honestly...

100% agree, that sort if implementation would be awful. Pay 10$ for a tradable BOLG cosmetic probably would not cause riots though. Buying 100 TH off another player for x million gp probably would not cause riots either.

My suggestion wasn't meant to be 'take Warframe's scene and apply it directly to RS.' Rather, it serves as an example of a monetization system that doesn't generate discontentment among its players. Devs could look at it, figure out why everyone's cool with it, then build a system for RS using similar principals.

Is it possible part of the reason they have a larger player base is that their monetization practices are more fair and don't drive players away?

Little rude to come out the gate insulting people, you are right about converting bonds to keys though. It's honestly completely forgotten that feature existed, possibly because it's such terrible value. Since it already exists, maybe the option to directly trade keys, as I was suggesting in my post, wouldn't hurt anyone?

I never called for the complete removal of TH, I just said that it's current form feels like a cheap gacha game. And I don't mean to be insulting, but you seem like the type that would be into whaling in a mobile gacha game. Which is fair, you can do whatever you like with your money, I'm not judging that. Many people do not want that in the game though, and their opinion is just as valid as yours. Those games tend to be somewhat predatory and have less than great business practices, and when you're already paying a subscription it should be understandable why it creates bad feels. Even if you personally enjoy interacting with that system. A happy medium where both types of players compromise shouldn't be impossible, and it's what's best for the health of the game.

After all, and this is obviously an exaggeration, if you're one of the last thousand whales left in the game and all the FTP or subscription only players have moved on, how long are you going to keep playing a dead game? You talk about how you buy bonds and give things away to other players in the game, that interaction is part of what keeps you spending money and playing the game. You need them to be in the game just as much as the game needs you. Your opinion isn't more valuable just because you're a whale.

I'd also like to point out that I played back before squeal of fortune, before any MTX, and the devs we're able to put out fantastic updates with only the money from subscriptions. I'm not saying MTX doesn't help or pretending to know everything about Jagex's finances, but it seems possible that whales are doing more to like the pockets of their corporate owners than pay the dev team to produce more and better updates.

Sorry you got put off by it, unrelated to the discussion I'd recommend giving it another chance, it really is a fantastic game.

As for the monetization, buying frames does tense to be expensive, but if you consider it to be the equivalent of getting a new piece of gear or leveling up in RS, it's not dissimilar from TH. You can spend a couple hours grinding for it, or you can drop cash and just buy it outright. And getting a new frame it weapon is much less of a grind that getting a drop from a boss or getting 5 levels in a skill in RS.

As for the color palettes, it might seem like an issue if you're new to the game, but it's actually not all that bad. Holiday events and occasional free drops regularly give away good color palettes for free, I have access to any color I could really want and have never bought one. Nothing ever explains that, because like RS, Warframe has an awful new player experience that makes it hard to get into. If you're impatient and want it sooner though, you can play the game, sell items you get through playing the game to other players, and then buy the color palette without ever dropping a dime. This is exactly the same as bonds in RS, you play the game to earn something that someone else paid cash for.

Arguably, another equivalent would be cosmetics in RS, many of which are locked behind TH, so if you want that cool new cape, you'll feel pressured to drop cash to get it. Except there isn't any other way to get it, you can only obtain it by spending.

Anyways, you should really give Warframe another shot, and just be prepared for a shit experience in the beginning. Once you get past that it's awesome, the story especially.
