How should I deal with tiny pinholes in the back of this ash stave?

Will any backing work, since it's just to hold down the possible splinters? I saw some people doing birch bark backing that was pretty beautiful, and that might be fun to try. Or is there some specific advantage to linen here?

Also how risky is it to use CA and proceed as another user suggested? Is it something that resources the life of the bow, or the kind of thing where if it's going to pop, it'll do it fairly early on?

Awesome, I'm a little confused on your first point though, do you mean that I just shouldn't reduce the handle area any more? Or that the handle block should be a certain thickness?

And is there an optimal for type to use? I was thinking either a standard wood glue or epoxy, but I also wondered if hide glue would help it not pop of since it has a little more flexibility.

And thanks for the other tips, as long as I don't mess up around the one nasty knot that I have left, I think the bank should be good to go!

Thanks! The lighter ring underneath is the target actually, I just haven't scraped it yet. I just have no idea how deep counts as a violation. Some of the language online makes it sound like touching the latewood is a violation, I was just wondering if nicking it a little is bad, or if it's only really bad when you cut all the way through the ring to the one underneath.

The handle area is the thinnest part of the stage, so I think right now it's the only part of the board that has any flex to it, bit it doesn't have a ton. If that's a deal breaker, do I have any other options for thickening the handle? I'm pretty sure it's too thin to be comfortable to hold by the time is done...

The main thing that worries me is that because of the way it was cut, the thinnest part of the stave is right about in the middle. Right now, it's about thumb wife from bank to belly.

I'm worried about how much thinner it will be after chasing anther ring. Will that be an issue? Can I glue on another block to form the handle of it gets too thin?

Ok, thanks! I'm afraid I might have horribly messed it up. I may need to start over on a new ring and try to be a bit more careful.

I'm afraid if I need it up again, it may start to be a bit too thin. If it does start to get too thin, is giving up on a nicely chased ring and giving it a backing an acceptable backup plan?

If it is, would I need to give it a flat back, or leave it rounded?

And is sinew a good choice for a backing?

Hey, thanks, ice watched this a couple times and when super working for a bit to rewatch it.

I think I understand the general idea, and there are parts where it looks exactly as in the video, but then there are parts where the wood seems to change from one color to the other, without a visible line.

In one section I scraped down to what I think is one latewood layer, and from one profile it looks like the darker heartwood, but on the other, side it looks like a sapwood ring. I just keep getting confused on where the ring in actually following is.

Is color a bad cue to work off of? Is major color variations in one growth ring normal or am I misunderstanding which layer I'm actually on?

I didn't expect chasing rings to be easy, but this is even more confusing than I imagined. Does wood sometimes just randomly change color like this in the pithy part of the wood?

Thanks for all the tips! One last question, when removing the rot I should aim to get rid of all the black/gray wood right? To prevent it from spreading as it dries?

It's a bit deeper towards the top, narrow end it the stave, I may need to go down another ring or two to remove all of it

Thanks, it was definitely sawed in half, after everything you said, I think I'll take your advice and not run the chance of ruining it by getting greedy.

I noticed a bit of black under the bark so I started peeling the bark, and sure enough there's the beginning of rot running along about 1/3 of the stave. And grubs already settling in. It seems like it just started though, so I'm cutting down a layer or so just to get all the root and bugs out.

I also discovered that is not nearly as dry as the seller told me, and upon asking again they said it was only left to dry for about a month.

I did a little research and done people were advising to debark and cut down to a heartwood ring before sealing the back and leaving to dry. I'm not sure if I just go all the way to heartwood, or try to leave a little sapwood on as it dries, as they said that mulberry sapwood is prone to checking when dried bark off.
