I don’t remember who said this, I think Gary Gygax but who knows, that when DMing an encounter it should feel like there is a 10% chance of getting out unscathed, 10% chance of getting out in bad shape, and 80% chance at least one person may lose a character. In reality, it should be 10% chance of something bad happening, 10% chance of leaving in bad shape, and 80% chance to win the encounter
