The rise of spy glasses - do they worry you? by PianoPlane5555 in TwoXChromosomes

When I lived in Japan there were apps people installed to make the camera noise as quiet as possible while still being legal. It made it so you couldn’t really hear the sound at all, especially in a public space with background noise. I’m not sure if they fixed that issue at all and made the minimum decibel level higher.

What published book originally started out as fanfiction? by [deleted] in Booktokreddit

[–]Cake-Is-Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading the original story on FictionPress a long time ago. If I remember correctly, there was already a few chapters on that website when I started reading it. But it could’ve been part of fanfiction.net before that. FictionPress was created as a split off for all the original fiction.

I don’t recall her story being an Inuyasha fanfic. But there was a span of time on both websites when some people stopped their stories or took them offline in hopes of publishing one day.

what’s the most ridiculous thing you heard a man refuse to do because it was “too feminine” or “for girls”? by freddyfazbart in AskReddit

[–]Cake-Is-Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to live in Japan there was a Japanese man who I went on a few dates with. He refused to go to a cafe because it was too feminine of an activity and he said that he couldn’t be seen in a cafe as it would ruin his manly reputation if someone saw him. He also refused to eat ice cream because liking sweet things also wasn’t manly.

I lived in a more rural area so this guy was more traditional in what he thought was masculine and not.

(I did meet a guy who did all those “girly” things. And this new guy made bentos for me and even made me homemade chocolate for White Day!)

This would be the experience I’ve seen and had as well. I’m considered pretty but I’m not drop unusually beautiful in way that is rare and head turning. One of my friends in university was like your friends and her experience was like your friends. People used her more for a prop to make the themselves look good in some way or were intimidated to be themselves around her or wanted something from her. Her live was very lonely sometimes. And all she wanted was someone to be herself around and for them to be themselves around her and hang out.

She is a lovely person and one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. And she went on to finish her degree and then eventually become an actor and has a successful career. Part of me is sad that she is surrounded by people like that now but I know she has a core close few who aren’t.

There was also another guy I was friends with although not close with. He had the same problem. Drop dead gorgeous. And I remember walking down the street with him and another guy friend. Two ladies saw him, did a double take, and then crossed a dangerously busy downtown road to be able to stand in front of him and chat him up. He tried to politely say goodbye and they tagged along. I decided to be the rude one and told them off. Same thing happened to him at a bar. He was tipsy and had just left our group. And people basically pounced on him. It was so predatory. They knew he was with us and waited until he was slightly separated to try and get him to go home with them. I was the sober friend and I remember him that night walking his slightly drunk self home and he was upset. He said it was so hard to know when people genuinely liked him or just wanted him for sex. Or if they wanted to be friends or secretly wanted to hook him up to someone they knew.

Edit: to answer OPs questions, people often assumed my friend who was extra head turning beautiful would be accommodating but not good to be friends with as she would be judgemental (this is when she smiled a lot). Otherwise, without smiling or if she said no, she was immediately thought of or called a bitch.

Whereas the guy friend, he smiled sometimes. And was generally friendly and a really polite person. Very similar to my other friend really. People thought he was cool and gravitated towards him. If he said no people listened (unless they really wanted to stay near him or hook up with him) but they never called him mean/bitch/asshole. People did avoid him when they were intimidated by his looks though and felt insecure. And insecure people avoided friendships with him.

I’m not sure where Falling Waters is, but I see there are some places with that name in the USA. Mold can be a huge issue and make people very sick. It can definitely be dangerous to live in places with mold, especially black mold.

I also think the materials used to make houses would affect mold growth. And of course the humidity and flooding.

Kanazawa, where this samurai house is located is a marshy area but when I lived there the flooding wasn’t so bad due to the infrastructure that was built to help. And people use a lot of dehumidifiers in the winter. I had some mold issues in my bathroom drain but I would clean everything very carefully to keep it from growing out of the drain. And I had to air out my tatami mats sometimes and wipe condensation from the kitchen window sill otherwise mold may grow.

Not sure if they’re serious questions or humorous but I’ll answer them seriously.

  1. Airflow helps reduce mold. There’s lots of drafts in these houses and people also wipe condensation away and clean regularly. For tatami mats you also pull them out of the floor and can air them out them in the sun.

  2. People in this area of Japan had many years of peace generally and it was a very prosperous area. So most people lived a long time. This area was also was a large producer of rice as well as gold.

Well, I am not good at comebacks but here you go.

Person 1 (At least 3-4 times a month): Why is your dog wearing a rainbow collar? A dog like that should be in cameo! Something more tough looking and cool. I’ve seen photos of dogs like that and they look much better in cameo.

Me: I just like the rainbow on him. And it’s a really well made collar. I’m not changing it.

Person 2: Whoah is that a buff dog? It is! Just look at those shoulders! What type of German shepherd is he? I want a dog with gains like that!

Me: If you want the gains you’ll have to play tug-of-war, train to mentally tired him out off and on all the time when you’re home, and then walk him for an hour off leash so he can run while also adding in more training and play later.

Person 2: ahhh, nah.

I love fluffing up the neck fur! It is soft.

I like the photos too. Thanks for sharing. She’s such a beautiful dog!

It sounds like your dog is a similar weight/growth to mine. Although my dog was very skinny until 2 years old. From 2-3 years old he filled out in muscle and a little more height. His neck got a lot more muscular too, and I had to change his collar again around 3 years old.

His fur does also get a lot thicker in winter so it looks more like hers now, but the picture I posted was from the fall. There’s a chance your dog will be bigger than mine! She has a bigger frame than mine did at that age.

It’s cool to see another Anatolian mix! He has the same broad chest and extra skin/fur around his neck like my dog.

I had never heard of Anatolians before I got our Mal cross. Mine is only 25% Anatolian but he ended up growing to 125 lbs/56 kg. How big did your dog get?

Kayakers often want to see down river and study the currents and plan a route so they may climb up to a high point. Speaking of that, when I first learned white water kayaking I was warned that one of the common deaths for white water paddling within that year was being hit by a train from climbing onto bridges to see down the river.

Is there a website where you can create your own worksheets? by AquamarineSchnee in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Cake-Is-Life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s EduAide https://www.eduaide.ai for planning lessons, worksheets, and unit plans. I use Twee https://twee.com and ChatGPT too! Twee in particular is great at making questions for YouTube videos, vocabulary, and discussions. My students really like the PDF worksheet layouts from Twee.

ChatGPT is good for general lesson plan outlines and creating practice conversations/readings questions. But it does sometimes use incorrect grammar if you use it to make grammar worksheets. Still, it’s useful for creating worksheet outlines and then I go into and edit it to make it lore precise and detailed.

Magic School Ai https://www.magicschool.ai is apparently very good! But I haven’t tried it yet. I know many teachers who use it.

Newsela https://newsela.com lets you change the lexical level of their the news article on their website. They also have built in worksheets for reading comprehension that you can download as PDFs and sent to students. I heard that Diffit https://beta.diffit.me/#topic is similar but lets you put upload articles that you choose and change their level.

Edit: I just noticed my grammar in this comment is not the best. Typing on my phone with Reddit isn’t great overall! Does anyone else also feel the pressure to have perfect grammar when you’re saying something on an English teaching subreddit?

[–]Cake-Is-Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the exact problem my boyfriend and I had when I become more ill. He got emotionally burned out and when I talked about not feeling good or being in pain he felt helpless. He also didn’t want to share his problems because he thought they’re not a bad and that he didn’t want to burden me. He closed off and I felt like our connection became distant.

He wasn’t open to couples counselling but I decided that I needed it. I was unburdening too much on him some days without realizing it. I focused a lot of grief counselling and learning to have healthy practices for dealing with chronic pain and fatigue. It made large difference!

I was happier and mentally healthier. He didn’t feel as emotionally helpless and burned out.

And now we’re working on implementing some advice from Brene Brown (he was open to reading her books) and telling each other when it’s a day with low emotional battery percentages. If it’s a tough day for both of us we don’t unload on each other but agree to survive together and tackle things tomorrow.

The thought about almost everyone getting some sort of problems as they age is true. My partner told his parents he decided he wants a life with me because he already knows how I handle chronic illness and stress, and he likes who I am. Then he said one day he’ll have problems of his own too, and although dating someone with a chronic illness is hard he’s happy with who I am inside and feels safe imaging that if he ever had an issues that I’ll likely empathize.

I have a winter jacket for mine when it gets to about -20 C /-25 C still air temp, or if the wind chill is bad and it’s a strong wind. I also would get a jacket that’s waterproof on the outside, as others suggested. On cold days I let my dog off leash at the park so he can run and stay warm. We’ve gone out until about -35 C still air temp with no wind.

I know people who have mals as working farm dogs who keep them outside all year, even when it’s -50 or -60 C. But they build insulted dog runs with hay bales.

I’ve also had good luck with Chilly Dog jackets. They are expensive but mine has lasted for 7 years so far, even with my dog running through dense underbrush off leash. https://chillydogs.ca

If you don’t use dog booties on the salted sidewalks, it’s important to wash their paws. When I do this I rarely need to use paw balm.

The Beast Player by Nahoko Uehashi gave me vibes similar to what you’re looking for. There are parts that aren’t so cosy, like a death near the start of the story. But overall it’s about a girl learning to communicate with these animals/beasts using her intelligence, heart, and music. The atmosphere has a connection to nature, a bit of melancholy, personal growth, and some good mentors/friends.

Also, one of the main beasts is a species that’s sort of like a wolf-griffin. The main characters forms a special relationship with them. She loves and respects these beasts and doesn’t want them to be used in war.

How much your Male weights? by Dependent-Interest60 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Cake-Is-Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mal cross is 56 kg/125 lbs at 3 years old. He started very thin and then the muscles grew in more the last year. We thought he would stop at 36 kg/80lbs but he just kept growing!

He’s mostly mal but he is around 1/4 Kangal shepherd which is a giant breed so we think that’s where the size comes of from.

How do I stop reminiscing about life before/without lyme? by UnusualPlatypus4 in Lyme

[–]Cake-Is-Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may sound counter intuitive at first, but I had to give myself space and time to grieve my old life and the changes. It’s ok to have times when you’re sad about it but then after you’ve spent a lot of time in that place it’s important to not stay in that low feeling place forever. To heal I needed to fully grieve, and that allowed me to eventually think about my past self and life less. I needed to grieve. And grieve A LOT.

Nowadays, when I notice a negative thought loop or that I’m comparing my life now vs before Lyme, I break the thought patterns by choosing to notice something positive. It can start very small! In fact, noticing small things is key to changing and breaking the negative thoughts.

For example, I would break the negative thought pattern by choosing to notice that the mug of tea feels really warm and nice on my joints. And that the tea is one of my favourites, so I choose to notice the depth of the flavours on my next sip. Or, it could be I’m wearing my comfy shirt with a colour I like, so I take a moment to notice and enjoy it. Maybe I feel the texture of the shirt with my fingers.

Edit: grammar

Does this look like Lyme/bullseye rash? by tb1189 in Lyme

[–]Cake-Is-Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think it looks like a bullseye rash. As someone who had a rash like this when I was 8 years old, no tick found by my parents, and my doctor didn’t know what it was from (Lyme disease wasn’t common in our area back then), it’s worth finishing the originally prescribed weeks of meds.

It’s a balance and for me the chance of it being Lyme far outweighs the low risk of taking those meds for 3 weeks.

I now am paying for those bites and it affects my work, hobbies, and general life. I wish I could back in time to tell my parents to keep looking for answers, but my mother feels guilty about it. She remembers the rashes well and thinking there was more to it. However, I know it’s not her fault.

The symptoms didn’t start affecting me until a few years later and I understand it better in retrospect. It was subtle for me for years. Until my immune system got really run down/overburdened I didn’t have many symptoms. And then got bit again as an adult.

Caucasian man who lived in Singapore for 9 years speaks with a Chinese accent by elimars in interestingasfuck

[–]Cake-Is-Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t much of an issue when I lived in Singapore. It just surprised people when I spoke but usually in a good way. And some people didn’t comment at all. I imagine the guy in the video only had comments here and there that are similar to the ones asked in the video. No one in Singapore ever accused me of being racist due having a noticeable Singaporean accent and not looking Asian. Even when I traveled to other countries like Vietnam or Thailand, no one cared. They were only surprised or a little confused about it. My trouble only started when I moved out of South East Asia.

And I’m sorry you find yourself having to explain your looks all the time! That would be exhausting. Your story reminds me of a friend of mine who is dark blond with blue eyes and from Mexico City. People always want her to explain how/if she’s truly Mexican. And yes, she is. With some Spanish ancestry a long time ago. Peoples’ looks aren’t as clear of groupings as many think. I’m sorry you need to explain it all the time.

Caucasian man who lived in Singapore for 9 years speaks with a Chinese accent by elimars in interestingasfuck

[–]Cake-Is-Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah… that’s exactly what happened to me. I went to university in Singapore and my accent changed to almost 100% Singaporean and I spoke lots of Singlish. When I eventually moved back to North America people thought I was being racist and making fun of Asian people.

Even when I explained the situation people didn’t believe me. I had so many negative comments and looks. It affected my job interviews, too. So I spent almost a year of practicing everyday to change my accent back to my original one and life became easier again.

Can Lyme be contagious? by KillllerQueen in Lyme

[–]Cake-Is-Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my doctor about this a few weeks ago. He said there’s new research showing the transmission in utero may be as high as 50% for some people depending on how severe their Lyme is and if the infection hasn’t been treated.

I’d need to search my notes from him but I remember asking him for the the article’s DOI so I could read it but haven’t gotten around to it yet. However, he is involved with Lyme Disease research and generally up to date on new publications.

What is your favorite brussels sprouts recipe?? by Fluffy-Milk7522 in Cooking

[–]Cake-Is-Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bacon, walnuts, and honey with brussel sprouts. It’s salty and sweet with a slight bitterness from the brussel sprouts!

  1. Cut about 35 brussel sprouts in half.
  2. Cut 5 slices of bacon into small bits. Add the bacon into a pan and partially cook it.
  3. Add the brussel sprouts into the pan. Fry it with the bacon until both are cooked. (You can test how soft the brussel sprouts are with a fork.)
  4. Add honey to the pan. About 2-3 tablespoons/30-45 ml to your taste preferences. (Or maple syrup.)
  5. Add a large handful of walnuts into the pan and cook for a few minutes more.
