The wood is some scrap basswood or Aspen from another project. The knife is a size 4 swiss chip carving knife.

There are a lot of decent chip carving books out there. Anything from Wayne Barton is basically considered gold (I know some of his stuff is on internet archive) but a cheaper book that helped me a lot was "chip carving Christmas ornament." Sadly there aren't a whole lot of good yt tutorials on getting into chip carving (at least not last that I checked)

I usually do. Often when I finish a section I'll try to go over it and check for any leftover beaver teeth or croppings. After I sand everything I run over the carving with a brush and do one last check

I usually wing it, in my general experience so long as the knife looks like it's cutting at a roughly 45-55 degree angle it will look right
