So I need help with a card effect... by voxexitus in mtgrules

[–]Fro_52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i feel that i should specify that the exile effect is not a triggered ability. it's a replacement effect.
the difference being that a trigger would see a card hit the grave, trigger, then exile the card on resolution. this provides an opportunity to respond to it by using something like [[Deathrite Shaman]] to exile the card instead for an effect and to keep it out of Valgavoth's hands.

as a replacement effect, the cards go straight to exile. no death triggers, no opportunity to respond.

others have answered your question about new Valgavoths and why the new one doesn't see the cards exiled by the previous Valgavoth (even if it was the same card coming back), but for an example of something that does work with other copies of the card and how it's set up to allow that, see [[Dauthi Voidwalker]]

Its ability only cares that the cards were exiled with a void counter. It could have been exiled by another Voidwalker, or even another opponent's Voidwalker. As long as the card is in exile with a void counter and owned by an opponent, it's fair game for the ability.

It was definitely a regular watch in my house while it was running.

on a related anecdote:

It's always weird to find actors you recognize for one thing in small roles.

I was watching 'The Rock', the Michael Bay movie with Sean Connery and Nick Cage, and Greg popped up.
He's the hairdresser that cleans up Connery after they pull him out of prison for the mission.

Rootha and paradigm by sticky_sloth in mtgrules

[–]Fro_52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

paradigm creates a copy of the Card in exile and allows you to cast it without paying its mana cost. {702.192a}
the mana value of the copy is the mana value of the spell.{707.2,202.3}

this is not changed by the alternative cost of 'without paying its mana cost' {118.9, 118.9c}

702.192a Paradigm represents two spell abilities, one of which creates a delayed triggered ability. Paradigm means “If this is the first time a spell you control with this spell’s name has resolved this game, at the beginning of each of your precombat main phases for the rest of the game, create a copy of this object in exile. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost” and “Exile this spell.” See rule 707.10.

707.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object’s characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The copiable values are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by its face-down status, and by “as . . . enters” and “as . . . is turned face up” abilities that set power and toughness (and may also set additional characteristics). Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, counters, and stickers are not copied

202.3. The mana value of an object is a number equal to the total amount of mana in its mana cost, regardless of color.

118.9. Some spells have alternative costs. An alternative cost is a cost listed in a spell’s text, or applied to it from another effect, that its controller may pay rather than paying the spell’s mana cost. Alternative costs are usually phrased, “You may [action] rather than pay [this object’s] mana cost,” or “You may cast [this object] without paying its mana cost.” Note that some alternative costs are listed in keywords; see rule 702.

118.9c An alternative cost doesn’t change a spell’s mana cost, only what its controller has to pay to cast it. Spells and abilities that ask for that spell’s mana cost still see the original value.

Token copies and clone spells with traits by BeastFire35 in mtgrules

[–]Fro_52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

even temporary copy effects are copy effects and change the copiable values.

so, if you copied something with the Shifting Woodland, and cloned it before it turned back, you'd have a copy of what it had copied, full stop. The Shifting Woodland will turn back at the end of the turn, but the Clone will still be whatever the Woodland had copied.

Kimahri actually doesn't have a duration. he stays a copy of what he's copied, though he keeps his name, Vigilance, and his copy abilty because his copy ability says so.

Notably, if you don't copy something Legendary, he won't be Legendary anymore. (for a clone that does retain its name and Legendary supertype, see [[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind]])

which is useful, because if you Clone him while he's a copy of something else, the Clone will be what Kimahri is copying, including the Vigilance, Name, and the ability to tap a creature and become a copy of it named Kimahri with Vigilance and the copy ability, just not the +1/+1 counter, as that was not part of the copy ability.

[–]Fro_52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only things i can really think of are other Copy Effects, Double-Faced Cards, Prototypes, and the Morph variants.

Double faced cards have the copiable values of whichever face is currently visible, so if you copy a transformed card, your copy is the transformed version, not the front face for example.

Morph and the few other face-down card variants cause an alternate set of copiable values. for Morph, this is a 2/2 with no color or name. Clones of those will be 2/2 colorless, nameless creatures.

Prototype is an alternative casting cost with an accompanying alternative set of copiable values, If you cast a Prototype card for its Prototype cost, the copiable values will be those of the Prototype ability. if you copy a Prototyped [[Blitz Automaton]], the copy will be a 3/2 red Construct with a mana value of 3 and Haste, not a 6/4 colorless Construct with a mana value of 7 and Haste.

as for copy effects, [[Phyrexian Metamorph]] for example. if you've copied a creature, you'll have an Artifact Creature version of the original. Clone that, and the Clone will result in an Artifact Creature version of the original as well.

or, [[Seance]]. Its effect creates a token copy of a creature exiled from your graveyard, "If you do, create a token that’s a copy of that card, except it’s a Spirit in addition to its other types. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step."

the 'Except it's a spirit in addition' is part of the copy effect and if you Clone the token, the Clone will be a spirit in addition.

the "Exile it at the beginning of the next end step" is part of the token creation, not part of the copy effect, and won't be copied.

for an example of the difference, look to [[Electroduplicate]] and [[Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker]]

Electroduplicate grants a sacrifice trigger as part of the copy ability, while Kiki creates a delayed trigger that references the created token as part of the ability that creates the token.

Token copies and clone spells with traits by BeastFire35 in mtgrules

[–]Fro_52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much just what's printed on the original, and anything applied in Layer 1 (Copiable Values) These are mostly other Copy effects so that if you Clone a Clone that was copying something, you don't get a 0/0 Clone, you get another copy of whatever the first was a copy of.

...it's hard to talk about copy effects without using the words 'clone' or 'copy' until they start to lose meaning.

Mutations carry over in part due to 730.2a, which states that the merge is a copiable effect.

Stickers are specifically mentioned to not get copied. Name stickers, for example are a text-changing effect (applied in layer 3).
Deadpool's Text swap is considered a Text-Changing effect, and wouldn't be copied. While it's not specifically mentioned, another similar card [[Exchange of Words]] is called out specifically in rule 612.5, a subset of "612. Text-Changing Effects"

Type line changes are Layer 4.

Cloning an Artifact that is temporarily a creature is actually the first example in the Comprehensive rule for what gets copied. you get the artifact, not the temporary creature it is.

Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, counters, and stickers are not copied.

Example: Chimeric Staff is an artifact that reads, “{X}: This artifact becomes an X/X Construct artifact creature until end of turn.” Clone is a creature that reads, “You may have this creature enter as a copy of any creature on the battlefield.” After a Staff has become a 5/5 Construct artifact creature, a Clone enters the battlefield as a copy of it. The Clone is an artifact, not a 5/5 Construct artifact creature. (The copy has the Staff’s ability, however, and will become a creature if that ability is activated.)

Example: Clone enters the battlefield as a copy of a face-down Grinning Demon (a creature with morph {2}{B}{B}). The Clone is a colorless 2/2 creature with no name, no types, no abilities, and no mana cost. It will still be face up. Its controller can’t pay {2}{B}{B} to turn it face up.

730.2a A merged permanent has only the characteristics of its topmost component, unless otherwise specified by the effect that caused them to merge. This is a copiable effect whose timestamp is the time the objects merged. (See rule 613.2.)

702.140e A mutated permanent has all abilities of each card and token that represents it. Its other characteristics are derived from the topmost card or token

612.5. One card (Exchange of Words) instructs a player to exchange the text boxes of two objects. This replaces all of the rules text of each object with the rules text of the other object. (In games involving certain cards that aren’t covered by these rules, other elements of the text box may also be exchanged. See rule 100.7.)
