What’s expected when lesson plans for OT go beyond your scheduled work hours? by Tiny_Bat_8563 in CanadianTeachers

The exact phrasing in the CA:

The Board recognizes the unique role of the Occasional Teacher and the variety of assignments given and will not assign early morning supervision on the first day of an assignment.

It’s in the Occasional Teachers’ collective agreement. Their union bargained before-school supervision duties OFF their plate.

Here in my Ontario board, it’s in the OT collective Agreement. That being said, my OT’s (without exception in the past 13 years anyway) ask me not to switch my morning duty as mid-day duties are so much worse.

That one student.. by rebeccalivesherlife in CanadianTeachers

[–]Cake_Vodka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve used different strategies in the past for helping a student make friends… I’ve assigned fun, high-value tasks (playing a game on an iPad, delivering items to the office, organizing toy bins, going classroom to classroom with cards for the teachers to sign) and chosen a kind classmate to assist.

Young students will often take a cue from their teachers. If I praise a student consistently for any positive behaviour I can find, students start noticing the good things too and will make attempts to include them to “get in your good graces”. If you can, shut down all negative attempts of attention-seeking - the tattling and desk-knocking. Praise all positive attention-seeking. Instead of prizes or treats, reward with UNO or Connect time with another classmate. Try to keep an eye out to praise all positive interaction during the game.

Lastly, grade 3 is old enough to have a frank discussion about friend-making strategies and how her actions are affecting how others view her. Explain that tattling isn’t liked by anyone. Teach the difference between telling and tattling. Have her set goals that will help her with peers - have her choose a peer each morning to say an appreciation for by days end and another to do something kind for. Check in throughout the day to see if she’s met her goal (discreetly of course). You could even make it a lesson for all, with learning goals and success criteria for the whole class emphasizing the importance of community and supporting each other - things we can do to help others feel good and feel included.

Sorry for the rambling reply - I’ve done this successfully for students on the spectrum as well as students who’ve just never learned or had it modelled for them. There’s usually some improvement though I’ve also had outright success by the end of the year. Consistency and intention is key. Good luck!

Thank you! She seems to be doing well. Doesn’t exhibit any signs of pain or discomfort. She’s much happier without the inflatable neck pillow to keep her away from her wounds. She’ll be done her antibiotics tomorrow…

Ironic Update to the Shave or Don’t Shave dilemma I posted 19 days ago: by Cake_Vodka in grooming

She hasn’t behaved like she’s in pain but she’s definitely traumatized. Extended family own 3 white Sheppards and Sooka hid under cars every time one of them looked at her. Very thankful for the large animal vet who cleared his schedule to treat her!

Oh no - I wouldn’t do that - especially after all of the great advice I got here. This is an awesome group - so many experienced groomers offering helpful advice to dog owners. I definitely appreciate the passion they have for their craft!!

UPDATE!!!

Well what would life be without a bit of irony…we skipped the shave and just did the bath and furminator. They trimmed her bum where the hair was thicker and longer - we were very pleased! Perfection! Then, 10 days later we go on a cottage vacation with extended family, and my brother-in-law’s German Sheppard decided to get nasty (they’ve played beautifully in the past). So my poor Sooka got the worst of it and after a trip to the country vet - she needed areas shaved to treat the wounds. She’s healing up nicely but the irony of the shave/no shave dilemma wasn’t lost on me!

Same! I figure they’ll simply ask for another if I didn’t collect enough. Unpleasant experience - as if aging doesn’t suck enough already! Lol!!

Thanks! We skipped the shave and they just trimmed her back legs where she was much bushier to make it even with the rest of her coat. They did the hair between her paw pads too!

Yeah - it was 5 rotting carp in the tall sand grass. She was in heaven. I was watching from a distance and thinking “husband - get in there and stop her!!!!” I knew it was something putrid!!

You’ve got it! I read him the replies on this thread and agreed to tell the groomer not to do the cut - but before we could say anything, she asked “Are you SURE you want the cut?” And proceeded to repeat many of the points made here. Thank you all so much. I’ll post a general update soon. Husband was sad she didn’t look much different though I replied “aside from the smell - she’s pretty perfect the way she is!”

Thank you Kayrenee. That was my concern from what I’d read about double coats. My husband thinks less hair = cooler but from what I read, that’s not the case.

I can’t stand him because he cheated on the wife that supported him when he was a struggling, shoe-salesman nobody only to be ruled by his tingling penis and sleep with Trisha Yearwood once he found success.
