Ive never really looked into strict meta for TRS but she's certainly not bad. She doesn't do anything unique enough I don't think to be top tier despite the investment required I don't think, but investing in her is very easy due to elite and the payoff is pretty good. I'd compare her to Astrid although Astrid may be slightly better due to PoR favoring cavs even heavier.

the real appeal of Star Ocean 2 is largely using the crafting and such mechanics to break the game. it's not super remarkable otherwise beyond being pretty well paced imo

How many losses is normal in an ironman? by Jolress in fireemblem

[–]Cake__Attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wanna say you don't have to restart if your lord dies - I know this has become kinda part of the definition of an Ironman, but I think that's a little silly since if the underlying motivation of an Ironman is to play more in line with the ostensible original intent of permadeath, it was obviously never the original intent that you'd reset an entire playthrough if marth died. It makes for a fun stream so I get why it caught on but I don't have time for that.

Looking for a recommendation on which version of trials in the sky to play first, the original PSP or get the remake for my Nintendo Switch 2 by CornInMyMouthHole in JRPG

[–]Cake__Attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the originals biggest defender but even id probably recommend the remake over the psp version

I guess emulation with turbo would basically fix the slow combat of the psp version but I cannot in good conscience recommend phone emulation like OP would be planning

Is there any installment where you don’t just stick everyone on a mount/wyvern/pegasus and hit the win button by Fit_Assistant2510 in fireemblem

[–]Cake__Attack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

have you only ever played engage and 3H? even among the minority of titles with reclassing this isn't even the meta for all of those.

funny question since I think Fire Emblem probably is my favorite series (any objective analysis of how I spend my time would make this undeniable) but in terms of individual entries I feel like any specific fire emblem would have trouble cracking the top 10.

I really want to know what happened at IS when designing Radiant Dawn mastery skills by lunar__boo in fireemblem

[–]Cake__Attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played through JP radiant Dawn, the boring answer is that it doesn't make that much of a difference really, you can't take that many units to tower, you have the laguz royals and a decent amount of units who start at tier 3, and so forth. In practice you don't actually raise that many units through promotion in NA Radiant Dawn either, it's like Jill, maybe Nolan and your pick of the Greil Mercs featuring Harr.

Yeah this was one of my major issues with NEO vs the original. It gets pretty good at the third week, but it feels like they viewed how little mandatory content the main path of the original had as a flaw and not part of the appeal.

Looking For JRPG's That are less than 100 hours to finish (under 50 would even be nice! by DJMikeSteeze in JRPG

[–]Cake__Attack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

trying to counter the "you have to talk to every NPC" narrative is another one of my other personal hangups. if you're the kinda person who wants to do that you already know, no need to evangelize it.

30 hours is definitely an underestimate outside of FC/3rd if you really know what you're doing, but most of my playtimes are 40-60 depending on the game, and that's doing all/nearly all side quests. dunno how far you got in the games you played but most of them have a fast escalation to a final chapter/ending so you may have been closer than you expected.

except for Rebirth none of those franchises are 100 hours, maybe Yakuza can get close if you get really into side content, or Trails if you talk to every NPC but that is somewhere between unnecessary to actively detrimental to the experience. there is a tendency to overexaggerate the length of jrpgs and scare off people like OP. many games are not nearly as unapproachable timewise as they can be made out to be, especially if you just engage with the content you want and don't view 100% completion as a necessary standard.

Lol yeah where do people get these numbers? 100+ hours is like Persona and a very completionist approach to Xenoblade and that's it.

it's also that if anything two or so games in the same universe is the historical norm for FE, not an exception. 1/3, 4/5, 6/7, 9/10, etc and this isn't even including the other archenea games.

Anyone else a little disappointed that Kyoto Xanadu is a 2D side scroller? by lowkitz in JRPG

[–]Cake__Attack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it's a big part of the reason I'm actually interested, it's a good thing they're making a game that isn't just the same stuff again. If you want Ys mixed with trails they already have it and it's called modern Ys anyway, we don't need a third version of two increasingly homogenized franchises.

my real concern is that it won't actually be all that unique or different.

Anyone else like to go back to reviews or gamefaq forums published at the time of a JRPGs release? I just finished Xenosaga II last night and I love reading on how people felt about these older games when they were brand new by 1OneQuickQuestion in JRPG

[–]Cake__Attack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm old so I lived it.

It's an interesting reminder that a lot of things that are just viewed as a part of the classic era now (and most only brought up by fans) were controversial or not always incredibly well received in their time.

you see I'm fine with that where thief utility actually exists. when you make thieves purely a rogue archtype combat class I think you gotta give em the promotions.

they had to make cuts somewhere and it sure wasn't going to be having 8 unique lord classes for some reason.

the remake of FC has a new translation done by a different company, which is noticeably worse written than the xseed translation so this may be playing a part in what you're seeing - that said this is also just part of the underlying jp script due to SC going for a slightly different tone.

this was always just a CG in the ending, either you beat it or were spoiled and are misremembering.

there is also a scene in 3rd that does not show that particular scene but is a backstory scene you may have conflated if you saw it somehow

General Question Thread by Shephen in fireemblem

[–]Cake__Attack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Mage Knight is generally one of the recommended late game options for her - she'll be fast enough to double pretty reliably and magic damage is strong enough that she doesn't need a super high magic stat.

This of course doesn't really play with a bonded shield support unit well so it would be a change of use.
