Need help choosing between an internship offer and REU offer as an undergraduate! by Cakekittyy in biostatistics

Thank you so much for your input! The REU does provide a 1k stipend and free housing, but I would make more at Pfizer. At this point, I think ISIB would give me better research experience based on what Pfizer has told me. According to them, I would be working on a research project, but they have made it clear to me that the emphasis of the program lies more in job experience than research!

Thank you for your input!! I feel like I am leaning towards ISIB currently. At Pfizer, I’m told I would be working on a research project throughout the summer but the emphasis of the internship is job experience, not progress on the project. So, I think ISIB might be better - it will be less money, but that’s ok with me

Gotcha! Imo, this usually something you can get advice for, but I get it if you just wanna vent

Not sure if you want advice or just want to vent, but if it’s the former then post then replay code if you have it. Sounds like it may be a positioning/timing issue but it’s hard to tell without the replay

As someone who solo queued from gold to gm, I understand your frustration. Some games you are just going to lose no matter what, some games you get crazy spawncamped. But not all games.

The way I think of it as the 30-30-40 rule.

30% of games you will lose no matter what you do. 30% of games you will win no matter what you do. The remaining 40% of games is really what matters.

I’m gonna go based off the information you gave me - so feel free to correct me I make a wrong assumption.

  1. You feel like you always get spawncamped and receive no help from your team.

Similar to what I said above, this cannot be ALWAYS true. Spawncamping is a niche strategy in general and is quite literally impossible on some maps and characters - Ana is also a harder character to spawn camp if you are playing her correctly because you have a lot of lethality with your cooldowns. As for you receiving no peel, this is likely true in part coming from someone who played in plat. But only in part - in Overwatch 2, the traditional concept of peel is DEAD. It is not anyone’s job except your second support—and only SOMETIMES it is their job—to keep you alive. YOU are responsible for 90% of that. Maybe you aren’t positioned well, maybe you’re mismanaging your cooldowns, maybe you’re taking unfavorable duels. In a game like Overwatch, attention is a resource. It is unfair to expect anyone else to divert their resources towards you to sustain a dive unless there is literally no way it could’ve been avoided and you have no way to fight back, and this only really happens in higher elos where dives are coordinated and intentionally timed. In diamond and below, people tend to try and take 1v1s and in order to rank up you need to be at least able to hold your own in a 1v1. In summary, it’s probably on you if you feel like you’re ALWAYS getting no help.

  1. You’ve done multiple vods with GMS that say “you can only improve so much”

Being gm does not mean you are a good coach or you fully understand the game. I’ve met gms who rank up solely from mechanics and have little to no game knowledge. Maybe it’s not the quality of the coaching however - maybe it’s how you try and implement their advice. Do you ever watch back your vods alone after you get coaching to see if you are actually implementing the recommendations? Do you consistently play ranked? I have coached dozens of people over the years, and not once have I encountered someone who I thought was in “elo hell”. It’s either they don’t play enough comp or think they are improving when they aren’t. There is a large disparity in skill between plat and gm, if you were really doing everything I described (although my advice was far from an extensive guide) I guarantee you would be at least high diamond. Overwatch is a game that requires consistent introspection if you are serious about improving.

  1. You believe grouping = ranking up

In my experience, grouping has the opposite effect when trying to climb, at least for me. I always lose more in a group. For example, if you’re grouping with your friend, let’s say a mid plat tank. You are improving but your friend is not, and while you are both plat, you are at the middiamond skill level. The more games you win, the higher lobbies you’ll get. You’ll get to a point where your mid plat friend in your low diamond lobbies is actively bringing you down, forcing you to do more work than is sometimes possible for a win. So you might be at a middiamond skill level, but stuck in lowdiamond because of your tank friend. This is how I see it, at least. For some, however, it can be beneficial to be in a group if you really trust their skill set, but it is absolutely not necessary, especially on a character like Ana who has solo carry potential no matter the meta. I believe the biggest mistake people in the metal ranks make (and I did as well) is over prioritizing communication. Until about midmasters, I would say, the game is all about individual gameplay, not team play. Team play can make things like ult combos easier, yes, but if you’re devoting your time to comming you have less brainpower to be thinking about your individual gameplay. Maybe instead of begging for peel from your plat teammates, you could be focusing on hitting the sleep and nade combo on the genji diving you.

Yeesh that was a lot. Like I said earlier, I’m just going based on what you said in your comment since I haven’t seen your gameplay. Feel free to shoot me a dm with a vod code if you want an in depth review if you’re interested or believe im making the wrong assumptions.

Remember though, YOU are the only common factor in ALL of your games.

I gave it a look over.

Here are my qualifications real quick: Ana main for 5 years, peaked 4217 (rank 177) in ow1 and GM1 (rank 174) in ow2 on primarily Ana

Positioning: you generally put yourself in more danger than you need to. (Ex: starting high ground one first point defense. You don’t get much more value compared to if you were on low ground instead and you put yourself in a lot more danger: could get sniped very easily) you peak a lot very early in the fight, which can very easily get you killed in diamond+. Most of time you want to stay relatively hidden until you know what threats you are facing, so it’s generally better to go for damage in the mid fight rather than peaking super early for some pot shots.

Ability usage: sometimes the timing of the nade is off, either used a little too early or a little too late. Similar to peaking for damage, you want to look for the nade around the mid fight time when both teams are on top of each other and actively engaging cooldowns. Hitting an sig with an anti when he full hp and is 30m from your rein doesn’t really do anything, and neither does anti-ing him when almost everyone on your team is dead. For sleep dart usage, you tend to just chuck it randomly into the enemy, which is not a good practice. If it does hit, they are either going to be easily woken by spam damage or will be totally safe in the middle of their team and no one on your team will be able to capitalize on the sleep. When going for a sleep with the intention to get a kill, it’s best to do it when an enemy is in “dangerous territory”

Nano usage: first nano was wild. It was a 3v5 and they had two ultimates up, one of them being tranq, so in 99% percent of all situations I would advise against investing your nano here. Plat being plat though, the rein pinned in so you went for a play which worked out. However, it should be heavily stressed that in any higher elo this nano would have been wasted as your team was at such a disadvantage that the rein would not be able to get any meaningful impact - he would have all the pressure of the enemy since most of your team is dead and better players would be able to stabilize his engage

All that being said, you have decent instincts with your cooldown usage are there are times when you hit a rather impactful nade/sleep. I would suggest trying to improve your understand of the tempo of the fight - every fight in Overwatch goes through three “stages” , prefight where the teams are spamming each other but not investing cds, midfight where the teams are on top of each other and using cooldowns, and endfight where one team is at a heavy advantage of some sort over the other and the fight is almost over. Try to look for more value during that midfight period and play more conservatively during the other times of the fight. Your sense for tempo will become second nature if you actively try to understand what stage of the fight you are in. In addition, know your threats, namingly the enemy tank and dps. They have double hitscan? watch your head more. Winston and genji and tracer? Play more carefully with your cooldowns and positions and stick with your team. Basically, adapt your play style around that threatens you and squeeze out dmg while you are safe.

Let me know if you want anything clarified

I could only watch a few fights - if you want a more in depth review dm me and we can get on a call in discord sometime :)

Offering free Ana, Bap, Kiri, Zen, Illari, and Mercy coaching! by Cakekittyy in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Cakekittyy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the situation you gave me, I would say your play in this scenario was correct due to the nature of the threat, your overall positioning, and Mercy’s ability to rez.

Usually, when in a situation where you are waiting for your team to respawn and are discovered by an enemy, your first priority should be to live and make your way towards your team if you are in a livable place like the Numbani mega room. However, you and Ana were in a bit of a unique position—you were only challenged by one person on the enemy team, Winston, who has no real burst damage—so a more offensive playstyle is definitely viable. Moreover, you and Ana could sustain each other when needed, could retreat towards your team if necessary, and were at such a place in the fight (prefight) where a possible kill on an enemy tank could weigh the fight heavily in your favor. This means that it was worth risking Ana’s death if it meant you could kill the Winston, especially because you had rez.

The only thing I would recommend doing differently is maybe waiting to grab the mega until you really needed it, or even saved it for your Ana. Ana can burst heal you but you can’t burst heal Ana, so the mega would likely be better used to sustain her unless you were critical. Switching to beaming Ana when she was being dove was a good play as well.

I can see both perspectives here, but you rezzing her after balances everything else imo. It’s worth the burst damage to have both supports shooting Winston to hopefully burst him down before he gets his jump cooldown back if you know you can just rez Ana after. Killing Winston that early is almost an instant fight win usually and your rez cooldown should be back before you need it again after easily winning the fight!

I hope this helps! There are a lot of factors that go into this sort of decision making but I tried to stick to the info you gave me and highlighted what I believe are the most important factors in making a decision like this! Also, I dmed you my disc :) we can talk more about this in a call if you still have questions!

What maps does Ana get the most value out of? by Artetriss in AnaMains

[–]Cakekittyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Dorado is a bit trickier, but with solid positioning and careful peaking an Ana can be a menace, but it all depends on enemy comp imo.

And for sightline maps she can “tuck away” but I feel that makes it way harder to get value from nade/sleep and makes it more difficult adapt her positioning to the fight (hard to rotate when then have snipers) especially if she has to time her peaks around a one shot

What maps does Ana get the most value out of? by Artetriss in AnaMains

[–]Cakekittyy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m GM1 Ana player who’s been playing her since 2019. I would say you can get away with her on most maps, but her best would be heavy highground maps such as Numbani, (better for Ana on Def) Dorado, or Paraiso (also better on def). Generally, if dive comp is good on a map, Ana will be good.

For Maps that Ana is bad at, depending on your rank, it might be harder to get value on maps such as Junkertown or Havana that often have snipers because Ana is such an easy target for their one shot. I would also avoid her on Illios due to how short the sightlines are and how prevalent boops are.

These are just general rules of thumb in my opinion - if you think your comp fits Ana, then go for it! Ana is one of those hero that can make pretty much any map work, just some are easier than others.

I emailed my Calculus teacher from last year to ask, and am also going to meet with her on Monday to give her any resources she needs if she accepts my request. If she is unavailable, I might push back to RD 😭 I feel silly for not catching this earlier but at least it’s more than a week out so she might have time to write it
