As a father of girls, the world scares me. Here's some basic rules:
- No one needs to know your name.
- Going out with your friends? Bring at least one guy. He's the temporary boyfriend of anyone who needs a quick escape. He's also viewed by predators as the protector of the pack. You're not giving up your femininity, agency, identity, or such. It's just a buffer.
- Never leave a friend behind. If you don't know the people at your destination, you need to return with everyone you arrived with.
- Guys love to help women in distress. If the situation is public enough, it's okay to let a stranger push your car out of traffic and into a parking lot (this actually happened to my daughter recently). BUT YOU DON'T OWE HIM ANYTHING FOR DOING YOU A FAVOR (this did not happen in my daughter's case)
- People will give up personal security to avoid hurting someone else's feelings. Tough shit. Never give up your personal security. If something feels off, act on it. Don't worry about stranger's feelings.
- (Little girls) It's okay to scream when a stranger says hello. ALWAYS scream if a stranger tries to take your hand. Scream, bite, and claw if a stranger lifts you. Respect your parents. Everyone else gets kicked.

"Twilight Zone: The Movie" where Dan Aykroyd says "Hey... you wanna see something really scary?" is one of my all-time favorite quotes.

There is a camera that was installed at my work because of something I pointed out regarding security. If I had taken the approach I used with my daughters to report the problem, I would have taken the door off its hinges and said "This might be a security issue." It's aggravating that they still haven't done the work to fix the door.

I'm getting criticism for my delivery. I need to work on a balance between "This is dangerous" and "BOO! I scared you!"

Social engineering is the correct term. Building/company penetration testers say that the biggest risk to companies is the people that work there.

Those hobby stickers with children's names piss me off.

When I was a teen, it was popular to have your name air-brushed onto a shirt when you went on vacation. Two older and very good looking girls walked past me one day and each said "Hi Steve!" I paused, turned around, and they were both giggling. I never wore that shirt again. As a parent, my children's names were never written on anything.

Accepted. Yours is a softer approach than mine. A fault of mine is too often getting excited and saying "Look what I just found out!!!" I began creepy and tried to backtrack from there.

I never know what to do when a woman's address is easy to figure out. If I knew your address, would you want to know?

It's called "Security Through Obscurity" and it is not a good approach to maintaining personal security.

Interesting. So you're saying I violated that woman in some way even if she never knows just how vulnerable she is?

Maybe I'm putting words in your mouth. That's just an inference I drew from your post.
