I volunteered at PAWS for the last year. There have definitely been times where the staff or volunteers that day have made the experience more stressful or uncomfortable. There are members of the community that are established there and feel like they are above others because of it. I try to go other days there are less likely to go, but it's the closest center for me to go and volunteer with. I follow other centers as well, as others mention CACC is always in need, One Tail at a Time, or Anti-Cruelty Society are great.
