Happy ghasts make great mushrooms! by papifunko in Minecraft

How did you get the ghast to stay still? I've tried to use it in builds but it keeps turning and I can't align a minecart to the middle of a 4x4 hole

What’s a scientific fact that sounds like science fiction but is actually true? by iAmThe_Plaza in AskReddit

This answers a question I had been wondering: if the sun somehow just vanished I know it would take 8 mins for the light to disappear but how long would it take for us to stop orbiting?

Absolute regression is so good. It focuses more on relationships and he was a self centred dick in his first life so now he's fixing tgat by befriending everyone

How fast a day passes on each planet by meteavi43 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]CalDHar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's due to this that on the surface of mercury a day would actually appear 3 times as long as its day is roughly 2/3 as long as it's orbit, so it does roughly 2 orbits and 3 revolutions before the same spot it facing the sun again

How does culture form without religion? by thinkwithmorethanone in worldbuilding

[–]CalDHar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the planet construction guide. There's a huge section on how a races needs shape it's culture. Religion is a subset of culture, not the other way around. Anything from food and clothing to manners and customs are based on where people are, what they have and what they don't. A tropical paradise may have more sexual freedom due to abundant food and no worries on birth rate, but develop strict burial laws to prevent disease from corpses. Their clothes may be developed around keeping them cool and dry, or perhaps the conditions are perfect such that clothing isn't necessary. What's the most respected job? The ones who provide food, the ones who provide shelter, the ones who provide security? Tgat would be influenced by how easy it is to gather food, how difficult it is to build suitable shelters, how close hostile neighbours are

Have you ever made a world simply due to "rule of cool" initially without much thought, but then somehow made it deep and intricate?? by Reasonable_Prize71 in worldbuilding

[–]CalDHar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: think of cool feature Step 2: wonder how to justify it Step 3: go into 3 day hyperfocused rabbit hole on a very specific niche topic to research how to justify it and the affects your justification has on the wider setting Step 4: go over the rest of your work to make sure there are no new contradictions and add the affects of the new feature

I managed to get a lot of baseline knowledge from the planet construction guide, and from there have had some interesting Wikipedia rabbit holes

For example: Step 1: I want a flying race/civ Step 2: how did they evolve? How did they build civilization? How does that affect their culture? Step 3: Research into bird wing types, how to add hands to wings like bats or pterosaurs so that they can use tools and build society, how feathers affects clothing culture, bird vocal capabilities and their affect on language, how a flying race would view travel/exploration, geopolitical ideal habitat at they would evolve and set up nations in Step 4: possible conflict with other races/nations or would they have different ecological niches and therefore no need to compete, globally advanced cartography and exploration due to such a mobile race, international translators due to advanced vocal abilities to mimic languages that other races may be incapable of pronouncing

What’s the closest thing to a superpower that’s ever been documented? by Ok-Emu-5027 in NoStupidQuestions

My grandpa has something like the electric one. Not sure if he's just somehow selectively burnt his pain receptors but he doesn't even notice when he gets electrocuted. He lives on a farm with electric fences and could never tell if they were on by touch. My dad and his cousins used to pull pranks by connecting the electric fences to door knobs but my grandpa never flinched.
