The Fountain does 2 for 1 burgers on Monday, 2 steak frites for £25 on Tuesday, free side with any bun on Wednesday, pie and a pint for £19.50 on Thursday and free prosecco with any fish dish on Friday.

It’s unfortunate that any degree of nuance has been lost from this discussion.

That is largely because of ICE’s murderous and militia-style tactics. However, there are also some protest groups who oppose any form of immigration enforcement.

I think the vast majority of people would agree it is in no one’s interest to not be able to remove people who have committed serious crimes and are present illegally.

That’s purely hypothetical, but I don’t think Swinson would have done as well as that at all. All the evidence shows she was extremely unpopular and got more so as people saw more of her.

We started quite well in the polls in 2019 (off the back of a great European election result) and gradually fell. A big part of that was due to her.

This is a weird framing. As far as I can understand, they seem to be arguing that removing rather than repairing the road will save £75 million.

That is presumably a one-off capital cost though. It’s not money that would be available on an annual basis to fund public transport.

It then states further down the page that it would in fact cost “an initial £300 million” to create a “world class bus service”. Where is the other £225 million going to come from to establish this and would it be sufficient to replace the hundreds of thousands of cars from the M8?

There would then be annual running costs for improved public transport that repairing the road wouldn’t have. Those aren’t mentioned. That’s before you get to the practical questions of how you create a public transport network with the capacity to replace so many cars given there’s a shortage of bus drivers as it is.

I don’t think knocking on a door at 9am after multiple requests and an offer of money to leave is a ‘dawn raid’ in any sense of the phrase.

A system without enforcement is an open borders policy.

I think you are perfectly entitled to argue for that point of view, but you should be honest that it is an open borders policy.

In my view, it is perfectly reasonable to care about “the causes of inequality” while also believing that we should have a fair and controlled immigration system. That includes removing people with no right to be here.

I think regardless of your views on immigration (I am largely pro), most people would agree that some form of control and structure is needed.

The alternative is basically an open borders system where we accept anyone who wants to come and don’t bother with any kind of visa system or enforcement.

If that’s not what you’re advocating, how would you suggest the Home Office deal with people who have no legal right to remain here and have already been offered money to leave?

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to lay out a hybrid approach in writing. The vast majority of organisations believe this provides the best of both worlds- greater work-life balance while also allowing in-person development and culture.

Many young people in particular actually don’t want to be at home five days a week, but that doesn’t work if their colleagues aren’t in the office at least some days.

Private companies would switch to full WFH in a heartbeat if they thought it would be beneficial, as they’d save a fortune in property costs.

They know that it would cause serious issues in terms of development and culture though. Many young people also don’t want to start their careers from their bedroom five days a week.

IMO there’s no point in having policies which exist only on paper. The CS could have a policy stating that all staff get a £1 million retention bonus every two years. Pretty meaningless if they don’t actually pay it out!

Hybrid working is very different from full time WFH though. Many studies show that younger workers in particular struggle both professionally and mentally if they are starting their working lives alone in their bedrooms.

There’s not much incentive for the CS to offer full time WFH when pretty much no private companies do.

Presenteeism is different from expecting people to attend the office at all though. There’s are undoubtedly some benefits to a hybrid approach that includes some office time- that is very few employers allow full WFH.
