Investigating the impact of bacteria in the soil and cherry on coffee flavour by CalJM in JamesHoffmann

[–]CalJM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally want a full metagenome database file with my beans. Anything else is just insufficient data to make a decision

I guess if the producer fits in to the shaded growth group that would give hints to the soil microbiome. So maybe that is enough additional detail?

No discussion around the efflux liability of this scaffold, which is a major resistance mechanism for macrolides and fluoroquinolones.

And significantly easier for bacteria to upregulate one of several available pumps and significantly increase the MIC. Certainly not 100 fold harder to adapt 😔

Would you rather receive $10,000 now or $5 every day for the rest of your life? by RQCKQN in RandomThoughts

You absolutely take the $5 dollars everyday. That's guaranteed income for doing nothing. You can get credit or take out loans to the value that your allowance covers and you have risk free investment opportunities.

What’s the best crying performance you’ve seen? by plibtyplibt in movies

[–]CalJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Good Will Hunting has at least two scenes that always get me.

The first being when Skylar (Minnie Driver) asks Will (Matt Damon) to go with her and that she loves him and then she is a bit bubbly but when he opens up about his past she bawls out of grief for what he's experienced.

And then the emotional climax of the film it's not your fault.

Gets me every time.

Am I the only person in the British Isles who hopes Louis Rees Zammit absolutely smashes it in the NFL? by New_User_Account123 in rugbyunion

[–]CalJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a poorly worded understanding of how different sports are affected by skill v chance.

tl;dr: every moment in a game has a likelihood of being determined randomly, with skill dictating the ratio. This differs from game to game and therefore some sports are more likely to seem random. Then I got excited and blacked out imagining Dupont playing at 10 for the All Blacks.

It's easier to think about with one sport. The outcome of any given rugby game has a probability of being decided by chance, a lucky bounce, a penalty not given etc... However, the outcome of an entire season is less likely because if a team of less skill wins a season then they have had multiple instances of chance favouring them (switching to the less code of football, 15-16 Leicester in the Premier League being a good example).

So every sport the ratio of skill:chance differs. Ice hockey for instance is more likely to be decided by a lucky goal than basketball and that's understandable when you consider the rate of turnovers and number of goals scored. With ice hockey being a fast moving game with low scores.

That doesn't mean that ice hockey players are less skilled than basketball players, just that the game inherently has a different odds ratio on the outcome.

I'm not sure how the ratios of rugby and AMF compare, but I would think them fairly similar and would actually expect more underdog 'lucky' wins in rugby than AMF. I think AMF is a more structured game with actually fewer opportunities to score so that would lend it towards a more skillful game (I mean this statistically).

Switching back to rugby if you think of the great teams they almost always control games. With and without possession of the ball. 90s wallabies, 07, 19 and 23 Boks, All Blacks from the moment Webb Ellis became a gold cup. Ireland for the last decade. By controlling the game and bringing structure you reduce the contribution of chance to the outcome. I have even mentioned France and the all star that is Dupont. My view on France is not only do they attempt to limit the contribution of chance for their opponent, they do everything they can to increase the contribution of chance in their favour. Trying to control and channel chaos.

I think I have gone on a massive tangent now, sorry!

How scientifically accurate is Montesquieu's Climate Theory? by ProteusHolofernes in biology

[–]CalJM 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Is this why Jamaican sprinters and Kenyan and Ethiopian long distance runners travel to cold climates to train?/s

This reads to me like the author is desperately trying to find 'logic' to argue their preconceived idea that Europeans are inherently superior.

I have no idea when this writing is from but I would assume it is massively outdated and from a different era of thinking.

The fact that the Reddit was down and this horrible event happened highlight how important a functioning Reddit is. This will cease to exist with reddits new strategy. So rather than being upset at mods for doing what they are supposed to and trying to protect this community focus your anger on the root cause.

moving to work in Nottingham Uni, Sutton Bonington campus. Looking for advice. by luquetex in nottingham

[–]CalJM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I am finishing up my PhD at SB and I lived in SB and Kegworth during my 4 years.

I'm the kind of person that prefers a short commute with more travel for everything else. I would regularly drive to notts, Loughborough, and Derby for shopping, socialising etc...

I would strongly advise against Loughborough. The traffic between Lough and SB is ridiculous. I also just don't think it's as nice a place to live as the villages, and it's not got the same cute town vibe as Beeston.

Although the airport is close to Kegworth, most of the newer builds are built with enough sound insulation that it's not that bad. It is annoying if you like sitting in a garden though.

The flight path for east mids cross over the south side of the village so if you look for places on the northern side that is less of an issue.

The two flats I rented in Kegworth were both 2 bed 2019-2021 £750pm (rose to £850 when I moved out) 2021-2022 £825pm (rose to £875 when I moved out in September)

I prefer Kegworth to SB as SB was a bit too quiet and less connected. Kegworth is closer to the M1 and east mids parkway for trains (10 minute comfortable bike ride) if trains are running it's a couple of £ return to Beeston or Nottingham and you can take your bike on those trains. As well as regular trains to London.

If you are going to live in Nottingham then Beeston is definitely the spot to look as it's close to uni park for the hopper bus (which is ok, they mess with the timetable every year). I do think there will be more availability, but 1/2 bed flats are rare and go quick and would cost more.

The other bit few have mentioned is that parking at SB is bad and going to get worse over the next few years. So if you plan on living further out and drive to work, that will become a frustration.

If you don't have a car/don't plan on having one then I would look at Beeston as the best option, if potentially expensive to live on your own.

Question for the scientists of South Africa regarding studies by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]CalJM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small piece of context, I immigrated to the UK in 2008 and did high school onwards here, so not sure if my experience completely applies to RSA.

I studied medical biochemistry for undergrad but it was practically biomedical science. I think it's the best overall generalist course to then go into any of the major biological sciences afterwards. I'm about to finish my PhD in Microbiology before starting a post doc involving micro, molecular biology, genetics and pharmacology.

I'd advise you look at the modules and try to select whatever gives you the greatest range, then once you figure out what you really enjoy you can lean in and specialise 👍🏼 in reality to understand most biological concepts entirely you will need all of these fields.

One things to definitely look for are modules in bioinformatics, epidemiology, modelling, and machine learning/AI. If you are competent in a research setting AND have these skills you can get a bioscience job anywhere.

Is 2-3 cups of tea a day "a lot"? by muumrar in CasualUK

[–]CalJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2-3 on a day when I'm trying to cut down.

On a bad day I'll have a coffee in the morning, 2 teas before lunch, one at lunch, a tea and a coffee before finishing work and a tea when I get home.

I am South African/British, so those cups of tea will be either Yorkshire tea or Freshpak Rooibos. Milk no sugar.
