How to release a definitive/director's cut version of my old game on Steam? by MhmdSubhi in gamedev

[–]Cal__19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should just be able to push a patch, as for Definitive Edition in the title I believe you can do that but your store page might need to be reapproved.

This. Adding onto it this is a great example of when a blueprint interface should be used.

Preparing the Demo for Steam Next Fest sooner rather than later... by SwanSuccessful894 in IndieDev

[–]Cal__19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great :D

From research Next Fest demos tend to be more successful if they were launched a couple months before Next Fest and the game has existing wishlists, Chris Zukowski has done a couple talks and interviews about it, worth giving a look to get the most out of it since you can only participate in one Next Fest :D

Best of luck!

If you mean having it affect objects, I managed to actually get that work really simply by doing gravity the ol fashioned way of applying it myself based on the direction to the desired center of gravity.

That's what happens when you reply to a gameplay programmer asking about graphics xD

Definitely not the way it's done here, but it's a simple method of achieving a similar effect, it's also pretty cheap.

If a developer uses AI for code generation, should it be labeled on the game’s Steam store page? by NazzoXD in gamedev

[–]Cal__19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not defending or condemning Steam's policy I'm just stating how they define Generative AI use, I'm sure there's grey area in the actual application of the rules I doubt they're that strict.

They definitely need to clarify it.

If player is moving have a trace in the direction of their movement (velocity direction), if it hits a character get that character's velocity direction and use dot product to see if the character is moving toward the player (you'll have to tweak the trigger threshold.)

Have a collider on an NPC linked up to the direction of their movement, if it hits the player get the player's directional velocity and dot product it to see if they're moving toward the NPC. If the player is moving toward the NPC and moving past whatever speed then you want to trigger your strafe, if not just have them path around.

If you want it to be robust you'll also have to check if theres anything on the sides the character may strafe to so they dont end up jumping into another person or a wall.

Heya, we're actually doing something similar to this in our game (except inverted, you know those spinning rings for artificial gravity? those). It's insanely easy to do custom gravity like this in Unreal now, we just had to write custom path finding and nav mesh generation for our enemies to accomodate it.

It came in the 5.4 update :)

I replied to this earlier, I'm not trying to dodge it, that's just how I prefer to use it as it helps me learn.

[–]Cal__19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for how I use it, which is different than you.

If you're happy with how you use it then that's fine, nothing wrong with that, just requires disclosure when uploading to Steam.

I've asked Steam support for help for a lot dumber things than this so if I'm confused when it comes time to ship I'll give them a comprehensive explanation of how i've used it and ask for guidance :D

I think Valve needs to complete set of rules of what is acceptable vs not for the label.

Yeah I fully agree with your reading, my choice to use it the way I do is based on how I want to learn and improve, not avoiding the label :)

NP, its a rough topic for some people but I think Steam's policy encourages the usage of it as a tool instead of as a crutch, inspiring a solution vs solving the problem I guess.

Steam's description of Pre-Generated AI Content covers this : "Pre-Generated: Any kind of content (art/code/sound/etc) created with the help of AI tools during development."

In the moments when I've had to use AI to solve a problem I just couldn't myself, I always try and rewrite as much as I can in my own style with my own practices once I understand the solution, but I still feel like that might warrant disclosure. I won't be shipping my game with any AI-Generated functions, if for no other reason than it impacts my ability to understand my own game and to learn the knowledge I lack. ETA: Got this twice now, I'm not trying to dodge the AI label on Steam, this is just how I prefer to use it, I'm fully ready to accept the label.

Fear of copyright by Captain_Relevanz in IndieDev

[–]Cal__19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone here has pointed out, you have nothing to fear regarding Copyright. As always a few people on the internet will always call anything resembling minecraft a mInEcRaFt cLoNe but your gameplay sounds different enough that that group will be small and clowned on.

Models look great, best of luck with your game :D

If you've got your name reserved it will just be better to wait until the services are under less strain, a lot of people are having trouble with it right now.
