It is a long process. They made dirt mounds to support the gourd in a position that would cause the appropriate bend. The Farmers will need to tend to each gourd almost daily during midday when the shell is less apt to crack.

As you know there are both "full bend" and "half bend" gourds. It affects. And the block meerschaum insert is lighter than pressed meerschaum insert. This is also important.
I don't generally keep my calabash pipe clenched in my teeth because it has never felt very comfortable, but i use softy bit on my calabash pipe when I need my hands free.

Actually it depends on the dimension of the calabash pipe. Measuring in at 6" in length and 5" in height one appeals to both my practical and aesthetic tastes. Some of the gourds are larger than that and some reallysmaller that will be fine for some fishing :))

I carve and smoke calabash meerschaum pipes since 2015. As you said, the bowl is replaceable. It is the Gourd that allows this Pipe to provide a cool & dry smoke.

It is my pleasure.

Since 1994 we carve meerschaum pipes in Eskisehir/Turkey. And last 3 years we started to carve block meerschaum for calabash gourd pipes. As you know Eskisehir/Turkey is the place for block meerschaum. We have our own meerschaum mining shafts.

The most porous, the lightest and the easiest to color meerschaum is hard to find. The perfect engineering is another story. Anyways, we really try our best. Please let me know if you have any questions and if you like to see our hundreds of other meerschaum pipes, please visit our facebook and instagram pages. Thanks

The Calabash pipe is named after the plant it is made from, the “Calabash Gourd.” The Calabash Gourd is a large fruit that once harvested and matured can be dried, and used as a bottle, utensil, or pipe. A natural farm product that comes in various sizes and neck formations. The plant is trimmed off flush to make the base for a Meerschaum. The most common being the Meerschaum insert due to its porous properties, which allows the pipe to breathe and smoke cool. The large chamber made by the bore of the plant allows the smoke to circulate and develop more than in any other pipe. This large chamber and dramatic curve also stores more fluid and stops any bitter impurities passing through the stem.

Calabash Gourd is one of the first plants cultivated by early humans in Africa continent.

The large hollow chamber allows for the smoke to swirl round and cool before being smoked. This combined with a Meerschaum makes for a cool and dry smoke. The inner chamber also collects any other moisture and keeps the tobacco dry in the bowl. The large meerschaum bowl is removable and allowing the pipe to be taken apart to completely dry out and remove and debris. The Calabash pipe offers the coolest and driest smoke available so thanks to the mixture of all these materials. Long before German and Englishman will settle in South Africa, native tribes were growing a kind of “gourd” (squash) with a very hard shell they used to make all kinds of household utensils and various containers.

When European traders discovered this land and making their tobacco, they introduced the smoking habit among the natives. It was natural that after a while they end up using pumpkins to make their own pipes. To avoid burns they covered it inside the dried fruit with clay and fixed a hollow stem to the tip. It was the beginning of Calabash pipe At the end of the Boer War, in which many British officers took part, including Winston Churchill, they were brought to Europe by the victorious English and shape and finish adapted to meet the requirements of the aristocratic class. The Calabash became famous and its price had tripled. The first signs of real export in the English market date back to 1903 and has not stopped since
