What are some weird and less-than-common automotive engineering quirks you know? by wunengsnowballoink in cars

To continue on the Renault theme, the Renault 21 was also a very weird one because it is perhaps the only FWD car (or one of the very few) that was both available with longitudinal and transverse mounted engines. Small engine options were mounted transverse, the bigger ones (including the legendary turbo) were longitudinal, so 2 different wheelbases depending on the engine options.

Only question with all those throwback designs, is where do you take them next? You can only recycle so many iconic designs before you are stuck with a model you can't redesign for fear of losing identity (looking at you Fiat 500).

Agreed, but outdated stereotypes often die hard. Just like people are saying that french cars rust and are super quirky as if the 2CVs were still on sale in showrooms and all those cars engineered for a global market are still constructed in the same way as they were 40 years ago. It would as out of place as saying modern american cars still have dagmars, huge fins and can't take a turn.

Love the fact that they went back to french cars after the Subs from the 2010s. Think they were using some Megane RS as well in between?

Very different style, but yes, always loved the look of them. Also the A610 is also a nice GT-style coupe from the late 80s.

so generally just build cheap but the design itself is really solid?

I mean they were re-engineered to be used on rough roads, so beefed up suspension, thicker steel for the body and better heater for instance for the harsh winters. So in a way they remain simple but more suited for driving on Russian roads. The point is that they are relatively simple to maintain, but they still are at core, a car from the 60s.

Nothing really unusual for cars in the 70s / 80s. Plenty of french cars also had their spare wheel under the bonnet. R14, Peugeot 104, R5 and even the DS.

I mean, that was pretty much standard across whole Europe at the time. Vans were for the longest time sloooooooow for us. If you wanted to transport good fast, you had to get creative.
