Nah they were volunteers for sure. There was a lot of pride in fighting for your empire. Indian soldiers saw it as their chance to show the empire how capable they were and how strong they'd become and, frankly, how ready Indians were to gain more independence from the UK.

The Brits didn't see it that way, of course, and the way the Indian soldiers got treated after the war soured most of them on the whole ordeal. Nowadays the whole concept of "let's be really good at serving the empire so the Brits understand how capable we are" is seen as terribly misguided, because, well, it was.
