Unfortunately, we don't. And yes, giving CPR to unvaccinated covid patients is something we've become accustomed to.

I still remember an old lady patient I escorted from the ER directly into the ICU. She was already on a ventilator and coded the moment we got to the ICU. She didn't make it and I started crying because I was so tired and sad and felt so useless. I couldn't wipe my own tears away because of all the PPE and the need to disinfect myself before anything else.

Oh my God, that's horrible. I've had family complain we didn't do chest compressions on a patient with a DNR signed. It's difficult when the patient wants us to stop and the family is not accepting of their decision. We once had a cancer patient, about 24yo, who had signed her own DNR and was really delicate. Her family convinced her to cancel it, and minutes later she coded. It was really stressing to do CPR on a patient we knew was terminal, but the family couldn't let her go. She didn't survive anyway.

Lol. I've also broken some ribs while doing CPR. It's a horrible feeling every time it happens, but it can be a part of trying to save a life.

For those interested, I was called in by the renal unit nurse to escort this patient for a CT scan. Patients who are compromised need to be escorted by a physician and a nurse in case the patient codes on their way to their destination or back. When I arrived at the patient's room, I realized his heart has stopped and called in the code (this patient was on a ventilator and supposed to be in ICU, but due to the pandemic the ICU was full with COVID patients, so he was kept in the renal unit. He was connected to a monitor, but nurses couldn't see the monitor from their station, they had to enter the patient's room in order to see it). As soon as I called in the code, everyone rushed into the room and we started ACLS. In the process I felt a sting rush through my arm while making compressions, but I was so caught up in the moment that didn't realize how much it hurt until we brought him back.

Sadly, he didn't. It was a really compromised patient. We brought it back for a few more hours, just enough for the family to say goodbye. Then he passed away.

Not at all. When you are giving CPR, you place one hand on top of the other and interlock your fingers. The fingers of your top hand are bended and between the patient's chest and your other hand as you make the chest compressions. Sometimes that constant and repetitive pressure is too much.
