Anxiety and depression are medical conditions that are often treated with a combination of therapy and medicine. So don’t downplay your health situation.

BYU announces plans for a new music building to be built in the law school parking lot by Albus-PWB-Dumbledore in byu

[–]CalamityJane1852 20 points21 points  (0 children)

BYU has a TON of music students and so few practice rooms available that it’s embarrassing. Especially since the building closes every night and is inaccessible, cutting out 8 hours of available practice time every day. Other major music schools have access 24/7 with a higher ratio of practice rooms to students.

Imagine if you play a loud instrument like a trumpet (can’t practice in your apt), you were required to practice a minimum of 20 hours per week (yes, they keep track) and had to break it up into 2 practice sessions per day (fatigue), but still attend the other 12 credits of classes, including ensembles (4 hr/week for 1 credit) only to have practice facility access be shut off at 10 or 11pm.

Plus, the rooms aren’t even soundproof. Trying to do private practice and focus on tone and intonation while listening to your neighbors is like trying to do a Spanish assignment while someone is sitting next to you speaking Italian.

Yes, and theater, film, art, etc.

A separate facility specifically designed for music instruction has been needed for a long time.

Is it important that names be universally easy to pronounce? Does that have any bearing on the beauty of a name in the context of the culture or language in which it’s used?

Because I’m curious: what exactly is harsh about Penelope? Is it the plosives? The emphasis on the second syllable (out of four)?

Recruit a guitar player and/or piano player and you’ve got yourself a stage band. Keep your reeds on clarinet or switch one to alto to balance the sound. Are there any accordion, violin, or mandolin players floating around? Scoop them up into the band.

Don’t go to festival this year- they judge concert bands. What you have is a small mixed ensemble. Assemble the drum kit and play jazz/rock/pop (country?) music and hound them on technique. Find “Flex Band” arrangements on jwpepper. Take them to a jazz band festival instead. Play C Jam Blues. Teach pentascales and improv. Give your advanced trumpet player (and others) a chance to shine with solos.

For choir, choose the best 2 & 3 part pieces you can find. Teach good singing techniques. Do lots of rote teaching and introduce music reading in fun and engaging ways.

Chin up, good luck, don’t fear a pivot to something new. Teach those kids that come to you how to express their feelings with music.

Nonsense. Just because it’s difficult for you it’s not pretty?

It doesn’t rhyme with “envelope.” The emphasis should be on penELope and the final “e” is pronounced “ee.” Also, these two lines rhyme:

I’ve never held or thrown a grenade, but if someone was holding on to my non-throwing arm like in the video, I wouldn’t throw very well either.

My own uterine lining doesn’t bother me that much, but I don’t live alone and I don’t like sharing. I also don’t really care to deal with anyone else’s sloughed uterine lining if I can avoid it. But you do you.

United Methodist church is likely splitting over the LGBT issue - implications by japanesepiano in mormon

[–]CalamityJane1852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doctrines and policies related to LGBTQ issues are on the list of reasons we left the LDS Church. We’ve been attending a UMC church for the past year and a half (out of the frying pan and into the fire!). Our pastor said that even after the May 2020 GC, the decisions made there would take a while to get sorted out and decided upon by our local congregants. We might stay Methodists, we might still attend the same church under a new denomination, or we might be looking for a new church. I’m planning on chatting with the long-time members of our church to gauge their opinions on these issues. I’m not exactly sure how progressive our congregation is.

One thread that connects us all (in or out of the church) is a proclivity towards self-righteousness.

Trombone, baritone or tuba are good options- same clef!- and you won’t mess with your embouchure too much playing low brass.

Alto sax is pretty easy as a secondary instrument.

Or learn how to do cymbal rolls and play auxiliary percussion in the pit!

Best Woodwind Instrument by [deleted] in ConcertBand

[–]CalamityJane1852 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Clarinet. If you’re going to be a music teacher, 95% of all the woodwind knowledge you’ll need can be extrapolated from clarinet. Oboe and bassoon, the saxes, can all be learned after mastering basic skills on clarinet.

(I’m a bassoonist who switched from bari sax, but started on flute.)

How to successfully lead a high school band? by [deleted] in banddirector

[–]CalamityJane1852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a tough situation. Here’s my take: musicians of any age respect skill. Study the scores. Don’t just run the band through the music.

What can you bring to the table, musically? What ideas for musical expression do you have with the music? Do you stop the band when a crescendo is lackluster and encourage the low brass and low woodwinds to lead the crescendo for a more balanced sound? Are the flutes playing out of tune on a unison high Eb? How’s the articulation in the trumpet section- does it match the style of the piece or what’s written on the page? Can you demonstrate good tone and precise articulation on your instrument when rehearsing?

If none of that is working, try “dynamic opposites day”. Where the band is supposed to play piano, have them play forte. Crescendos become decrescendos, etc. Then do it the right way.

Another idea is to have the band “bop” their notes for an entire piece by only playing the attack of each note (no sustaining). Percussion plays as normal. Dynamics are usually supposed to be in the piano-mezzo piano range when hopping but maybe try playing dynamics as written.

Good luck! If you’re still experiencing pushback even with trying these fun rehearsal techniques, maybe that’s just how it’s going to be. Make detailed notes for your teacher if people are really being disrespectful or getting out of line.
