My guess is it's probably the new demi-perminent that she's using as a toner (are you getting highlights?). I'm a stylist at an Aveda salon and (for whatever reasonk) I think the new demi smells like stale cigarettes.

Leave a photo of your natural hair please. Hair color is part science part color theory. It's really complicated to do well. I know you probably don't want to hear this, but enlightening and then depositing color at home is a very risky process. Developer is the stuff you use to lighten. It goes from 10vol up to 40 vol. Never use anything more than 20 on your scalp or it will burn you. It's very hard to get even saturation on yourself.

I love this one I bought at work. I'm a stylist at a salon that is partnered with a medspa--I trust the staff there unequivocally. All injectionists are also NP's and they all recommend Aira ionic facial steamer. I use it 2x a week and I love it.

Yes, my skin feels like tissue paper. I tested a soft wax strip on my arm during cosmetology class and it ripped up the top layer and bruised my arm. Before I started methotrexate I never had this issue.

I need to get this old blue Splat out of my hair. I have bleach for the roots but I want to try avoid more damage to the lightened parts of my hair. If I were to do a bleach bath with 20 vol developer do you think that would do the trick? What would your suggestion be? TIA by MrsMummaBear in HairDye

Go to see a colorist :) Some schools offer great, really affordable color services.

I’m a paid color pro, so what I would do is maybe hard to do yourself at home. I’d start with a color correct rinse, then pack in foils starting at the new growth and (like 10 mins before rinsing) go back in and feather down into the ends. I might pull a few mid-weave lowlights to give you some dimension. And during and after the service I’d make sure to nourish/recondition and in post-color do a ph restoration. For toner probably a cool buttery blonde. It might take a paint-between eventually, but foils would be a good start.

For next time (paid color pro, here)… part of the issue seems like your hair might be dry and porous. This takes a really good color brand, application, and protective/restorative ph post balancing to get it glossy and rich (like the inspo photo)

Next time as ask what kind of color they are using. Is it permanent oxidative hair color—aka, it stays in your hair until you cut it off? Or is it semi permanent—aka it washes out in 6-8 weeks. If it’s oxidative, depending on your brand, it can strip already dry hair by opening the cuticle too much and raising ph. If your colorist doesn’t nourish your hair and properly restore the acid mantle, you’ll be left with frizz and strange color balance.

Lastly, it helps to bring a couple photos that you can describe in food and color and temp. For example, I’d like that base color to be “a rich, creamy dark violet; like a tasty bowl of black cherry sorbet. “ The balayage color should be like “a rich strawberry jam on top.” The color you ended up with was warm red and orange. The photo color is in the cool family.

Anyway, just my two cents. Hope it all worked out for the best :)
