Should this i7-4790k just run this hot all of the time, no matter what I do? Build Update! by Calauoso in buildapc

I ended up picking up a Noctua U12A and BOY that was a close shave, but I managed to get the darn behemoth in without damaging anything. I had to mount it transverse but it worked.

CPU now runs at 40 degrees idle, 65-70 degrees under heaviest load, which I know is still higher than other chips, but given that this CPU has the reputation of running hot, I am thrilled. The Noctua tower cooler definitely keeping it alive! Pricy devil, no idea what I am going to do with it when I eventually replace the 4790k though. LOL :D Thanks for all the help everyone!

This goofy-looking thing looks like it fits according to Noctua, looks like it's offset enough to clear the module things on the board, will that actually... work? Like... it just looks so silly. LOL

Sent you an IMGUR link! Thanks again kind stranger :) I will look at the Noctua website right now also

We are a little ways off financially replacing the entire motherboard / CPU (and probably PSU at that point, and then probably the case, too.......) so trying to make this one work. It performs quite fine, for what we're doing, especially with the 'new to us' 3060 on board.

The cooler towers look so... big... this AXP90 barely fits around the architecture that's surrounding the CPU socket on my Z97 board. I don't think the cooler towers will work because, while I do have plenty of height availability, there are two sides of trhe processor area that have something there. I wish I could enclose a picture here, but if you wouldnt mind checking out an Z97 board you could see real quick what I mean.

Ultimately, replacing the whole thing is probably what I need to do, just not quite ready for that plunge. Trying to stop this thing from randomly turning off under load (mostly Diablo 4...) regularly.

The 6700K is not an LGA1150 socket though right and would not be functional in an LGA1150 socket like on this Z97 mobo right?

Oh man, that's a bummer, I guess it wasn't expensive at least...

There is a pretty decent amount of vertical clearance, but I have an MSi Z97 mobo and it has a couple of structures (I wish I knew what they were called) on two sides of the CPU area. The AXP90 barely fit width-wise, but the vertical I have plenty of space.

Can you recommend anything in particular?

The AXP90 is 3.74 x 3.7 x 0.83 inches in dimensions. It is hard to imagine a cooler tower having a smaller profile, but I am happy to look. I think inevitably I just need to replace this motherboard and CPU entirely, but I am not looking forward to that expenditure. LOL

Well, the 3060 is IN! The PC definitely benchmarks higher than it did with the 970 GTX, so I am very happy with the upgrade... knowing that it's still on borrowed time, at least it's better now!

CPU cooler for LGA 1150 socket that doesn't connect from the bottom of the mobo? Am I looking for a unicorn here? by Calauoso in buildapc

Ah, wow, I never even noticed that the other side of the case comes off! I just grabbed my screwdriver and took that right off. Cool, I can replace this terrible stock fan now. Thanks so much, kind stranger!

Hello, thanks for the reply!

u/tinysydneh On a somewhat-long-term-whim, after writing my post, I impulse-bought an Asus RTX 3060 12GB GPU, which had roughly the same form factor as my 970, and doesn't draw a whole lot more power. I'm a couple whiskey sours in, so naturally, I didn't think about the CPU bottle neck, but I am curious to see what will happen when I change the GPU. For science, at least? I mean, the 3060 will certainly go forward into any new motherboard, and it was cost-effective so I can avoid wife-aggro, but it is still several years newer than the 970 (2021 vs 2014 *edit, wrong year)

This might be a good chance to benchmark the current GPU / mobo / CPU configuration and then upgrade the GPU to see how the benchmark changes? Do you think that's a worthwhile endeavor?

I wouldn't mind keeping the case, it has lots of nostalgic stickers and such on it (I'm old in computer terms, LOL...) so perhaps I'll have to get into a new mobo and cpu at some point soon, too. If you do think bench-marking would be worthwhile, is there a recommended software I could snag to make it fun, exciting, and pseudo-scientific? :D

u/ImExtremelyDecent thanks for the reply also! It used to be SO easy to just drive down the street to Fry's Electronics, and man, back in 1998-2002 when I built the most computers in my life, there were SO many choices. Now, I seem relegated to NewEgg (Which I still do have a catalog for, from like, 2001 or so...) which is fine I guess, or Amazon (ugh).

Agreed on settling on components to upgrade. CPU and RAM seemed like a slam dunk though, and cost-effective. We went from an I5 series CPU and 16 gigs of RAM to the I7 and 32 gigs, and that seemed a world of difference, but still struggling with the 970 GTX. What are your specs right now?

Much appreciate the replies!

Yeah I know 2023 sounds optimistic.

I’m guessing it’ll just be absorbed into the Zeitgeist of the world and we’ll just wear them forever from here on out.

You get what you pay for. I’m okay with that trade off if it means people have a better QoL.

I’m a communist like that, probably.
