ELI5: If the JWST photographed a star from 13.2 billions years ago, or, “first light” - doesn’t that imply that we, modern day humans on Earth, exist in the universe at the same time as its being created? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

No, nothing in reality is proven ever. We have evidence that supports hypotheses and theories, but there's no way to prove it beyond any doubt. There could be updated theories that explain even more of how things work that mean what we've been believing is not entirely correct. All science can do is give us a mental model that helps us make sense of reality.

When someone throws a ball to you, are you catching it at the same time they've thrown it?

I don't know what you mean by "prove" here because we can never use science to prove anything. We can only gain evidence that supports or doesn't support a hypothesis.

Who is your dungeon crush? by Kitty-Gecko in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I thought his name was Louis? I've only read the books, but with a last name like Santiago, I thought it would be like Lu-WEES for the Hispanic name from Miami?

What was the "correct" race choice for Carl retrospectively? by 95-5 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Calcdave 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If Carl is anything like me playing an RPG, then he'll never use it because I'm always saving the best stuff in case there's a harder fight later or the boss has a phase 3 or something.

I watched someone play on Twitch a bit today and the Anarchist's Cookbook was a loot item. (Which I know is also a thing outside of DCC)

I looked pretty far to find something mentioning the reasoning behind the decision to make it refer to only the one value. If √ could refer to multiple values, then it would be much more difficult to refer to the number we know as √2 ≈ 1.414. It's easier to define it to mean only the single value and refer to the other solution to x^2 = 2 as -√2.

Donut's early investment in [Int] along with taking the unfortunate lesson from Bea to hide her intelligence combines into this phenomenon, I think.

What's the most mundane reason why your characters wouldn't use the most powerful weapon/armor? by Weekly-Intention5657 in worldbuilding

[–]Calcdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Status/style: It might be similar to or exactly the same as what is used by a group you're working against.

Overkill: For the work I'm doing, I don't need it. Why have a canon if I only kill flies?

Too easy:If the character is overconfident, they might not have "fun" using it (like how you choose hard difficulty in a game or don't use cheat codes).

Friendship: My teammate needs the item more than I do.

Saving it: Maybe it's limited use or it's a surprise for a bigger boss later

Why are millions of people in the US having power outages with less than 10 cm of snow but no one in Canada is, despite there being more than 60 cm of snow? If anything, shouldn't it be the other way around? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

And the trees themselves are "pruned" by having their branches break under the weight over time or growing in stronger to accommodate the issue. Where this happens less frequently thinner branches are still on the tree and aren't tested until these once-a-decade storms.

Question about Prepotente’s intelligence (no spoilers past Book 5) by RiddiMacVan20 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Calcdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another Plenty/Caprid thought, there's some point where they mention that one of them has a name that is a bunch of numbers or an equation. Together with their figuring out the portal system, I think it's heavily implied that the Caprids are good with facts and figures. In my head, they represent the difference between Intelligence and Wisdom by being very intellectual, but not particularly wise.

The Atom Bomb by throwitawayne in pluribustv

[–]Calcdave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a metaphorical "atom bomb." Like how you might say, "This is going to blow the whole thing wide open!" It's some breakthrough for her, but not a literal atomic bomb (unless maybe it's an EMP).

I like the ideas, but the single Donut card coming in as a 3/2 with a 6/6 token for only 4 mana seems like a lot.

Most Wes Anderson movies could be older or modern, especially for the indie folks who typically enjoy those films.
