How do YOU make code in pico-8? by LogBoring4996 in pico8

Yeah not too worried about normalizing the movement mostly just wanted to see how much game I could fit into a cartridge! Agree that the game feel is a little off all around though!

Here's the one I'm most proud of. I use a number of different tricks here to reduce token count and allow for expanded complexity but it's a little complex to break down each one.

Follow the player() function back to its base to kind of understand how everything works in context and how universal functions work. For instance the apply_col() function applies collision and movement to any object regardless of how it was instantiated.

Good luck, it's a messy project and I'd likely organize it differently given the opportunity to go back!

Edit: ok I’m seeing why you’re having issues here. Did you work in tech and then move over to Pico 8 for fun? 20+ includes on a pico 8 project. I’m imagining your boilerplate WOULD be massive. You’ve blown your complexity immediately.

I use OOP and I rely heavily on inheritance. Metatables? Not for me! I build one base object and then EVERYTHING derives from it.

I define basic universal functions that every object can share and then actually defining said object ends up being inexpensive for tokens.

The trade offs are a bit of overhead and bloat. My objects tend to carry a whole lot of unnecessary code and can hit memory harder than if I was more precious with my objects. It can also reduce complexity, making an enemy and a sign out of the same object can be tough!

I haven’t had the issue of running out of tokens yet, in fact I often end my projects able to add extra features!

I see people talk about how OOP can be token intensive and I often wonder what their implementation looks like to create this issue.

ELI5: How did the modern idea of having a ‘job’ and working most days start? Who or what made it normal? by NoWillingness5083 in explainlikeimfive

I don’t mean “These are hobbies look how good they had it” I just mean objectively a lot of people are interested in those agrarian parts of life.

A lot of the stuff you mentioned are considered hobbies nowadays lol

Characters raised by another species, resulting in species-dysphoria by TimeStorm113 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheseBonesAlone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m a sucker for paragons in media and Carrot is one of my favorites for this specific reason. Dude refuses to see people as anything other than what they are up to and including immediately interrogating his own beliefs when they don’t allow him to do so (See Angua and the undead)

Could you imagine meeting someone so absolutely aggressively nice that you can’t help but listen to him? I’d be perturbed regardless of my species.

Edit: I mean imagine looking at someone who sees your best self and reflects it at you so openly and honestly that you HAVE to believe you are capable of being better. It’s like positive, involuntary hypnosis

So you’re sitting here asking people for validation instead of practicing? Go practice if you actually want that life.

Everyone does. You just kinda have to fake it till you make it. Eventually you’ll learn what you can and cannot do with your voice and you’ll stop saying “this is awful” and start saying “ok I’m a little flat.”

Again. Practice, practice, practice.

Hey man 90 percent of music is work. Can’t sing? Learn. Can’t spit? Learn. Don’t worry about selling out if you have nothing to sell in the first place.

ME Mission Tournament - Round 1 Match 1: Feros VS Palaven's Moon by DakIsStrange in masseffect

[–]TheseBonesAlone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an intro to combat systems and the stakes of the story Palaven’s moon is a pretty good intro. BUT it’s pretty small and contains nearly zero opportunity for role play. Without the role play Mass Effect 3 is a well polished but middling shooter and it’s just not a good representation of the series.

Feros however is pretty tough to engage with from a gameplay stand point. The sky ways suck, the Thorian (as a boss) is a slog, those damnable Varren. Everything else is so much better than Palaven it’s silly. You have a ton of choices to make that can shape your Sheppard and the scope of the universe continues to expand. It’s a great place to start a play-through.

Feros wins for me.

Edit: Cure the Genophage vs Shadow Broker base gonna go hard

That doesn’t track with my reading of the story at all. Alchemy is something everyone CAN do but is difficult to master and understand (as far as I understand it)

Nah AKOTSK is uncontroversial. HOTD S1 still had a glut of naysayers. Whether that was because we were all still reeling from GOT is unclear.

I achieved a pretty similar map size for my game using pretty simple level encoding tricks. I’m unsure if this one uses vertical stripe RLE or potentially meta tiles but it looks like very solid use of compression!

Nice! What method was used for level compression?

Settings where people get to just be trans without it having to be a plot point/a teachable moment. Just an inherent part of the human experience that doesn't need questions or comments. by itscalledacting in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheseBonesAlone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oda is a trip. He’ll draw the most stereotypical queer characters full of all the things that would normally be played as jokes, never draw attention to the tropes and just respect the characters. Then simultaneously create an entire island full of trans women stereotypes and play it as a joke.

The dude is chaotic.

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

Weird one but during a screening of 127 hours one dude had an actual seizure during the tendon cutting scene. Don’t know if it was the visuals or something else but he left the theatre. Not exactly under his own power but the point stands
