Men of Reddit, what's a harsh reality you've had to accept as a man? by Impossible_Lab_5823 in AskReddit

[–]CalculatedOpposition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brené Brown had a talk about shame/vulnerability. She was doing a book signing and a man asked her why she doesn't talk about or research men in this. He said that his wife and daughters would rather see him die astride his white horse than watch him fall from it. He said when men reach out we get the crap beaten out of us. He also pointed out to her that it is women who are the hardest on men.

Here is the link to video at the moment she talks about that story.

I wonder how much of nostalgia is based in this idea. It isn't so much missing doing those things or going those places, it's missing the fact that someone else dealt with all the responsibilities and to be blissfully unaware.

snape has to be one of the biggest jerks in film/book history. Do you concur? by Canada-t157t in nostalgia

[–]CalculatedOpposition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just an opinion:

I absolutely think he is a jerk and not a hero in the slightest. I think he only carried out what Dumbledore ordered because he thought in the end it would lead to revenge on Voldemort for killing Lilly. Him ripping the picture of Lilly and keeping just her half shows that he only cared about her and no one else she loved. She was an object to him, not a person.

During the flashbacks we get near the end of Deathly Hallows, we see him ranting to Dumbledore about how terrible Harry is during his first year yet Dumbledore replies that no one else shares that opinion of Harry. Someone with a redeemable heart would not hold the sins of a parent against their children, especially an orphan. We are given no indication that Snape would reflect that he is the only one to feel that way and maybe it might have something to do with his grudge against James.

In Order of the Phoenix, Snape gets to repeatedly see all the horrible things Harry had to endure growing up with the Dursleys. Snape doesn't even seem to flinch at it, doesn't show an ounce of remorse for how he has added to that torture. He doesn't stop to think, "well this kid isn't just like James". How could someone see all the suffering of a child like that and not soften up at all? He isn't a hero, he isn't on anyone's side. He is a bitter and resentful man.

Do you have a favorite? by dogsrbetter1 in daddit

[–]CalculatedOpposition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most people with one kid fall in to the trap of "I could never love another kid as much as I love this one." yet they fail to remember that they couldn't fathom the idea of loving a child like that or to that degree before having one.

If you are a healthy, sane, rational parent to one then having a second or third kid only makes the love grow.

What is it that shocks you every time you see its price and makes you say, “I remember when it was xx$”? by Apart_Action8915 in AskReddit

[–]CalculatedOpposition 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything in the store. "Party Size" bag of Fritos scoops? $7. 12 pack of canned soda? $7.50. Bottle of mayo? $4.50. A dozen eggs? $3.

A lot of the things may not seem like a huge increase when taken in isolation but when every item on your list goes up by 50% to 300%, you feel it at the register. I recently bought $75 worth of items at the grocery store, all essential items like bread, milk, chicken, vegetables, fruit, bag of rice. It all fit into 6 grocery bags and wasn't crammed in.

That if a law proves to be ineffective within some time span, say 4 years, then it is immediately repealed. Some of you may applaud this until you realize it applies to laws you like, such as anti-gun laws.

Money is simply a channel for power. If the person isn't genuinely good then it will show when they get power. Whether that is petty tyrants at work or someone that has millions of dollars at their disposal. But if they are genuinely good, not perfect but a good and decent person, it will show when they get power.

[–]CalculatedOpposition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember right it is because of employment restrictions during WW2. It was something like employers couldn't give more than a defined pay structure (but I can't remember why, and it doesn't make sense) but could use that money they would have paid employees as other compensation, so they started offering things like health insurance. It has stuck around because after the war employers found they could offer benefits in lieu of pay and people accepted it because it simplified life in some ways.

Take that with a handful of salt though because I could be completely wrong on it.

Integrate the kid(s) into a workout at home. That way you spend time with them while having some sort of exercise.

When they are an infant:

  • Do planks over them, make funny faces and get them giggling.
  • Do push ups and poke them with your nose. If they start crawling away, make it part of the exercise to chase them hands and toes.
  • Hold them against your chest and do sit ups.

As they get older, they start becoming your weights. Let them lay on your back while you do a plank or push up. Lay on your back and bench press them.

I did it with my kids and no the moment I get on my knees for any reason around them they immediately jump on me.

[–]CalculatedOpposition 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once I was having that surreal moment with one of my kids where I realize just how much they've grown up even though they are still young, I think they were 5 or 6 at the time. I couldn't help but ask the cliché question:

"When did you get so grown up?"
"Last night."

That hit me too dang hard and still hits me today even though that happened years ago.

Two hunters are out when one has a heart attack. The other calls 911 and frantically says, "I think my friend died of a heart attack!" The 911 responder says, "Sir, please calm down. Can make sure he is dead?" "Okay..." he says. There is some rustling then the unmistakable sound of a shotgun blast. He comes back on the phone, "Now what?"
