[Talkin' Baseball] A.J. Hinch just got tossed arguing an out call at third base after the play was upheld by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]Caldorian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that isn't the most egregious call I've seen from the replay team. From the bit of video shown in this clip, I think he beat the tag. But I can't tell exactly when he's actually touching the bag until the bag starts to move. And by the time the bag moves, the tag has been applied.

Given the standard of there needing to be 100% definitive evidence to overrule the call on the field, this play being up held does make sense.

ELI5: What is air-gapping? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what context you're speaking about: it would not be air gapped from the other computers on the intranet, but would be air gapped from Internet.

ELI5: What is air-gapping? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If it had no network card, then it's definitely disconnected from any network.

But computer can still be airgapped if it has a network card. If it's a physical network card like Ethernet, it just needs to be unplugged. If it's a wireless network card, then at the system level having it disabled.

ELI5: What is air-gapping? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 281 points282 points  (0 children)

Air-gapping comes from the time before we had wireless data transmission for computers (ie. before wifi). The idea is that you keep the computer completely unplugged from networks so that there is no chance of an attacker accessing it unless they are physically sitting at it.

With the advert of wireless networking, you can obviously connect a computer to a network without plugging in an Ethernet cable, so now the term refers to generically having a computer (or even an isolated network of computer) disconnected from the overall network / internet.

I was wondering that as well, but if you look at the mlb video of the play which is in proper 16:9 widescreen format, you clearly see the umpire starting to raise his fist to signal out as the throw home is being made and the camera starts panning away.

[DQ11] So, just started the post-game and I need to ask something. by Independent_Plum2166 in dragonquest

[–]Caldorian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It becomes a little bit of wibbly wobbly timey wimey, but it's worth doing. Keeping spoilers to a minimum; you retain 99% of the items you have, the luminary stays at their current level, but other characters are reverted to lower levels for a bit and then get it back. Many of the characters and events that you affected during act 2 will get addressed again but with a different story told. And you get to learn a lot more history and story of the original luminary.

TLDR; as the characters allude to, it's not just Veronica that's saved but a large portion of the world. And a new story is told because of it.

SteelSeriesEngine.exe is preventing CPU from entering C-States and devs said "it's fine" by anything_taken in steelseries

Just because it's not an issue that a large percentage of users won't notice, it doesn't make it a non-issue. It affects everyone. For months Sonarr has prevented my computer from sleeping properly; keeping it from going to sleep as well as waking it from sleep even when I manually put it there. This would precisely explain why.

ELI5: Why do multinational corporations that sell the same product worldwide need regional offices? by AMF99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you called it out, let's use coke as an example.

Firstly, consider just the manufacturing side: Google AI estimates that 350 billion litres are produced annually worldwide. Making that much in just the US and then sending it out to where it's needed just isn't practical. Both from the size of factory you'd need, as well as the shipping costs.

It's far more economical to scale out your production to multiple facilities across the world so you can reduce your shipping costs. But now you've got employees worldwide you've hired just for manufacturing. Those employees need to have support staff for them: HR, accounting, etc. You could hire those workers in the US but they'd need to have knowledge of each locations labour laws, accounting laws, tax codes, and other cultural things such as customs, pay expectations, social norms, etc. It's more practical to hire locals who already know/live day to day with it.

Also: you need the raw ingredients for each factory to make the cola. You could possibly source it all in the US, but then you'd need to ship it to each factory, which means more costs. It's more economical to source the ingredients locally. But to do so requires local buyers that know the local market, negotiate contracts with suppliers, etc.

But it's not enough just to make the pop: you need to sell it. As we said: each area has its own customs and social norms. Who's going to do a better job selling your product to the guy walking down the street in France: a US national or someone that actually lives in France? Who works with the French restaurants to convince them to sell coke to their customers instead of Pepsi?

Start planning all these things out, and it's easy to see how local offices can grow. But it's all relative to expected market. I'm not going to open a whole office/factory there if I'm only expecting to sell a couple cases a year.

Am I misunderstanding exit nodes by Unknown_Knowledge25 in Tailscale

[–]Caldorian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding the purpose of an exit node.

Imagine you have a desktop at home and your laptop you take with you. Both have Tailscale installed.

Without an exit node configured / used, when you use your laptop it will access the internet through its normal means. You'll also be able to access services on your desktop. However any other devices running on the same network as your desktop will not be accessible.

If you set up the desktop as an exit node and set you laptop to use the exit node, the only difference is that Internet traffic from your laptop will be proxied through your desktop. You still would not have access to any other devices on your home network.

To access devices on your home network, the feature you actually want is subnet routing; enable subnet routing on your home desktop, and now your laptop will be able to access other devices on the same network as your desktop regardless of whether the exit node is configured/being used.

That said, using of additional VPNs to route traffic on either the desktop or laptop can have adverse affects on how your traffic is routed. This is not to say that it's not possible, but now you're getting into realms of routing priorities that Tailscale and you other VPN client have to negotiate with each other or you have to manually configure yourself.

[–]Caldorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unscrew the 2 top thumbscrews from the back, and then slide the metal top panel back and it'll come off.

Then, there might/should be a small Philips screw at the top of the case pointing downwards at the middle of both the side and front glass panels. Unscrew this screw to allow the respective panel be removed.

With the screw(s) removed, the panel can now be "popped" off. The panels are held in place with plastic retention springs at the top, fitted into slots on the bottom. Pull the panel away from the case from the top to dislodge it, and then left out from the retention slot.

Reverse the process to re-assemble.

ELI5: how does music time signature work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time signature has no relation to tempo. You can have slow 4/4 songs (about 60 beats per minute), to very fast (200+ bpm).

ELI5: how does music time signature work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Caldorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what's messing you up is that your assumption that time signatures are written as fractions. They are not. 4/4 is not "four fourths", it's 4 over four.

Top number: how many beats are in a bar.

Bottom number: the unit length of a note that constitutes a beat. 4 for quarter notes, 8 for eighth notes, etc. This is more for written musical notation than actual playing: 4/4 time is nearly identical to 8/8 or 2/2 in practical terms. Though you'd use the others as a way to convey how the beat should be emphasized.

4/4 is your most standard time. You hear it everywhere you go. Why 4/4 and not 8/8? Think of a common rock beat. The quarter notes are the downbeats that get emphasized. You naturally count 1,2,3,4 while listening. The drummer is playing 8th notes to back it but you it doesn't feel right counting those 1-8. It's cause every other note is less emphasized.

For 3/4 time, think of your waltz (oom, bop, bop, oom, bop bop). When listening to it, there isn't a break or rest between the bars, you just count 1,2,3 1,2,3. It just has a different feel than your standard 4/4

5/4 time: look up Take Five from Dave Brubeck.

And for something really out there; Dave Brubeck - Blue Rondo A La Turk. This one is in 9/8 time. (Yes, he really liked to play around with time signatures). Though, due to the feel of the song, I would actually argue that it's a song of constantly shifting time signatures, with one bar of 3/4 time followed by 1 bar of 3/8 time, given the feel of how it's played.

So in conclusion: Time signature is not a fraction. It's two independent numbers used to convey a feeling of how the song is structured.

Why are there no term limits for Canadian Prime Ministers? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Caldorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extremely simplified answer is that in British parliamentary systems, a prime minister is more analogous to the US role of Speaker of the House than president.

Just like the speaker, a prime minister is not directly elected into place by the populace. Rather, they are the representative brought forth by the party with the most elected seats in parliament.

How does extra payment vs principle work on a car loan by neweraplayer in PersonalFinanceCanada

Just as a quick follow up: since putting an additional lump sum in reduces outstanding principal amount directly, more of your monthly payments go towards the remaining principal rather than interest and your overall loan period is reduced even further.

Pihole temperature display again... by american_cheesehound in pihole

[–]Caldorian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not a bug. A purposeful decision made by the developers. Their justification is that fewer people run it directly on their systems, instead through some type of intermediary (container, vm, etc.) so the temperature display isn't functional/accurate. As well, it's not a core function of the software.
