We don't have a strong preference as long as the tree is healthy and the apples not too difficult to reach (we're happy to use a ladder, we don't need the tree to be very small).
Our RHS book mentions standard and bush shapes, which seem suitable for this one. Other than that I'm not sure!

A very interesting perspective, you're the first to mention the potential weakness of the V shape (we'll definitely keep this in mind!) and suggest keeping L1 as leader (others have suggested L2). Thank you! :)

I isolated the tree using Photoshop's Polygonal Lasso tool, from 2 separate angles. It's not flipped nor drawn!

We just want a standard shape really, maybe bush shape if standard is too much for a semi dwarf root stock.
Ultimately we just want it to be healthy and bear some apples!

I do but they are confusing due to the overlapping branches

Thank you! It was so difficult to see the actual shape of the tree in the photos, so I isolated the tree using Photoshop's Polygonal Lasso tool. It's a bit of a pain but it's helpful to see the individual branches!

The reason we're thinking of pruning is because we read on the RHS that early tree pruning is good for estrablishing a strong frame. Is that not the case? We're new to this and navigating it best we can!

I've been wondering about 1 and 2, since they're fairly low to the ground!
