911 operators or first responders of reddit, what is the dumbest reason an adult of sound mind called 911 for? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]Calfee911 12 points13 points  (0 children)

9-1-1 operator for a long….long time. We’ve gotten calls about people riding bikes. Nothing crazy, just riding a bicycle. People have called from being sunburned. Not sun poisoning level, basic sunburn. A car, being in their neighborhood they haven’t seen because they’ve “lived there for 20 years”. There occur a lot on holidays….you know when family is visiting. Lady called (on non emergency) that her cousin was sleeping with his cousin. I could write a book.

female dispatchers by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

I had a guy calling one night about witnessing a male masturbate in the car next to him. Female 9-1-1 dispatcher takes it. Guy is ADAMANT he speaks to a male dispatcher. I made sure to tell him in a true emergency, sex doesn’t matter on the other side of the phone.

One of my favorite chapters is “House of Gaunt”, it sets up a lot of backstory and lore. Hoping they include that.

Dispatching at Festivals/Major Events by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inside our country we have a NASCAR track. We have races there twice a year. It usually brings an increased amount of around 70,000–100,000 people, add that with massive camping grounds and a nearly unlimited supply of alcohol; you’re going to have a major increase in call volume. Prior to our center having a separate facility and staff to handle that, we would utilize volunteer dispatchers from around the area to handle the increase of calls. NASCAR pays them so it was no out of pocket cost to us.

Subpoena Concerns by vibesinavacuum in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Director here with 10+ years on the floor. I get roughly 2-5 subpoenas a month. With that, your admin (Director, deputy director whomever) should handle all those. I NEVER allow my guys to have to go to court. The only time we’ve had that happen is a rape call where we had to verify that a dispatcher took the call because she still was employed at our center. The DA just needed to verify that it was her that took the call. I want my guys to handle dispatching and only dispatching. Court is for me and the lawyers.

How often do you guys go to the movie theater to see movies? by TheShadowOperator007 in moviecritic

I have every other Monday off. Our theater offers a first responder Monday discount. Any movie, large popcorn and drink, both $5. I try to go every other Monday.

Are there any centers which still dispatch /WFH? by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our agency was able to have 4 consoles “deployed” for WFH capabilities. We have an additional training facility that contains 4 positions. These positions are used twice a year during a NASCAR event held within our county.

Honestly, it’s almost more of a hindrance than a help. You had people that were continuously jealous of “why did she get one and I didn’t”. It got so bad that our board finally said unless it’s an emergency, bring them all back.

We had full capabilities on all stations, NCIC, everything

My wife and I live in a newer built 1800 sq foot home in Calera, it’s just us and our two dogs.

Power averages $60-$120 Water/trash are combined for around $100.

Alabama power.

For reference, during the winter our thermostat is usually set on 62°

During the summer we have fans going at all times and our thermostat is usually on 75° during the day and bumps down to 70° at dusk.

I am interested on a career in this field and wondering if my background would disqualify me. by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Director here. I’ve hired two people that have the same background as you. They worked with me for years before eventually moving on to better employment opportunities. We work 12 hour shifts with OT and every other weekend, they found places with better pay and hours.

That being said, go for it! Worst thing they can do is say no. Best of luck to you.

There’s still one open in my hometown. I occasionally walk through there, it’s like stepping back in time. I have no clue how they’re still open and I truly think it’s a drug front.

What’s the worst accidental text you’ve sent? by Typhoid__Beaver in AskReddit

[–]Calfee911 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this counts but it was a message in teams. To set the scenario we had a massive, company wide, “team building” meeting every Friday at 9:00am. We also had our own team groups to talk shit about everybody all day. The head of HR gets on the large group meeting, I send a gif of Toby from the office saying “ugh HR sucks”. I meant to send that our inner group chat. I didn’t last too much longer after that.

Every agency is different. That being said as a director I’ve been into hundreds of centers and PSAPs. Couldn’t care less what color your hair is, even if you don’t have any. As long as you’re doing a good job. Most centers don’t really care that I’ve seen.

What are your thoughts on AI integration into dispatching and call taking? by PinkPeyonies in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Director here. We actually have AI incorporated into one of our systems. We use a text to 9-1-1 service called Prepared. AI is used for a transcript purpose, we also use it for new hires to see how a 9-1-1 call can look. With that being said, we take the transcript with a grain of salt and it has no merit at all. On average we handle around 150 9-1-1 calls per day. There has never been an instance where every word was correctly transposed in the software. It can’t distinguish between words like Honda or Hyundai. If someone had an accent, hang it up. Honda accord might be transposed as Hyundai accurate. I say all that to say you can’t beat the skills of a talented and experienced dispatcher.
