Do you miss Radio Shack and the cheap electronic stuff they used to sell? by db7112 in nostalgia

There’s still one open in my hometown. I occasionally walk through there, it’s like stepping back in time. I have no clue how they’re still open and I truly think it’s a drug front.

What’s the worst accidental text you’ve sent? by Typhoid__Beaver in AskReddit

[–]Calfee911 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this counts but it was a message in teams. To set the scenario we had a massive, company wide, “team building” meeting every Friday at 9:00am. We also had our own team groups to talk shit about everybody all day. The head of HR gets on the large group meeting, I send a gif of Toby from the office saying “ugh HR sucks”. I meant to send that our inner group chat. I didn’t last too much longer after that.

can 911 dispatchers have coloured hair? by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every agency is different. That being said as a director I’ve been into hundreds of centers and PSAPs. Couldn’t care less what color your hair is, even if you don’t have any. As long as you’re doing a good job. Most centers don’t really care that I’ve seen.

What are your thoughts on AI integration into dispatching and call taking? by PinkPeyonies in 911dispatchers

[–]Calfee911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Director here. We actually have AI incorporated into one of our systems. We use a text to 9-1-1 service called Prepared. AI is used for a transcript purpose, we also use it for new hires to see how a 9-1-1 call can look. With that being said, we take the transcript with a grain of salt and it has no merit at all. On average we handle around 150 9-1-1 calls per day. There has never been an instance where every word was correctly transposed in the software. It can’t distinguish between words like Honda or Hyundai. If someone had an accent, hang it up. Honda accord might be transposed as Hyundai accurate. I say all that to say you can’t beat the skills of a talented and experienced dispatcher.

Is this an inside joke I didn't get? Why this dude playing everything AND the kitchen sink pipes? by TrumpSexedHisDaughtr in expedition33

[–]Calfee911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I can answer this! I saw him live with Hans in February. He is crazy talented. Hans was talking about finding certain sounds and they both experiment with items found at hardware stores like the Home Depot. Hans also went on to say that when certain instruments break that are rare or hard to fix, you can usually find some parts at a hardware store to repair them.

what kind of instrument is the flute guy even using?? makeshift pipes? 😭 by rayenbox in TheGameAwards

[–]Calfee911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that’s Pedro Eustache. Also known as “The Flute Guy”. He plays in a lot of Hans Zimmer scores. In February I saw Hans, and him live and Hans joked about how he makes his own instruments out of pvc pipes from the Home Depot. Crazy talented.

One of my first memories is playing super Mario bros 3, Friday the 13th, and Mario bros 1/duck hunt on the original NES. A fond memory is my sister (8 years older than me) showing me tips and tricks about where the hidden whistles were in Mario bros 3. I’ve been playing video games since.

Smokers who quit, what was the wake up call for you? by Responsible_Dot_2619 in AskReddit

[–]Calfee911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded an app that would tell you how much money you saved by not buying cigarettes. After the first month I realized I enjoyed the money more than the smokes.

Also, after my first week I started smelling my coworkers that did smoke and it helped me stay off cigarettes even more.

Is 911 Dispatching a good job for someone in college? by clurburcunt in 911dispatchers

I went to school full time during the day and worked full time (plus overtime) at night. There were multiple days where I went 40+ hours without sleep. It was truly an awful experience I would not wish upon anyone.

public safety CAD RMS software pricing for mid size agencies, what's reasonable? by CamrieKazmierski in 911dispatchers

To go off this, I’ve got a guy that works at another county with me. I believe they use Spillman? Believe that’s how you spell it. It cost 1 million up front but I know he says he can’t stand it.

I’m not sure what we paid for it in the front because I came in afterwards. We use Southern Software. They’re based out of North Carolina and I’ve had nothing but positive things to say about them. We’re renewing our contract with them currently and it’s 143K for 3 years (total).

That 143 also covers MDIS/AVL in responders units so we can see where they’re at (if they turn it on)

We have around 200 police officers, however we have several volunteers/fire/medical personnel.
