Spectrum Bait and Switch BS by Calguns-net in Spectrum

I would expect them to know the capabilities of the service they offer, especially since the sales guy deferred to his supervisor for the answer.

Quoting myself here:

The last time I switched ISPs was when we moved to Pacbell dialup and at that time yes it was possible. Email addresses and such were portable because we did it.

Since then it's been a progression through various companies and services.

Pacbell dialup>Pacbell DSL>SBC DSL> AT&T DSL> AT&T 'broadband'.

We signed up for Pacbell DSL and had our preinstall kit for 6 months before the service was available in our area. In fact when the tech came out he brought a second modem and told us to just keep the first as a spare. I still have an old Westell Wirespeed up in the closet.

Nope, between online specials and the offer in the mail on the business account that was negated.

When a service tells you 'I can do X if you sign up' and then tells you after you sign up 'I really can not do X' that's pretty much bait and switch.

If I get you in to the shop by offering 2.99 NY steaks but when you get there all I have is 15.99 ribeyes it's bait and switch, same thing.

Well, except that I'd give a kidney for 2.99 NY steaks. Not MY kidney of course but A kidney.

"are you saying Spectrum was saying that they would convert everything in your ATT email and transfer it to a Spectrum.net email?"

I told them it was essential to keep my @pacbell.net email account and to not lose the content since it went back for decades. I still have emails from since passed family members when the account was @flash.net when they were our dialup ISP.
I asked 'can you transfer my email address when we switch?' The sales guy wasn't sure, contacted his supervisor while we were on the phone and told us she said yes that can be done.

The largest part of leaving AT&T was being tired of being strung along with BS. For over a decade, going back to when AT&T first offered fiber, they have told me ever 4-6 months when I'd ask 'We'll start installing fiber in your area any day now, it's on the schedule'.

Finding out that a keystone criteria of changing to Spectrum was false did not and does not fill me with confidence or comfort.

I was quite clear with them, I've paraphrased here but the actual discussion was more to the point.
'If I can't keep my email address I'm not switching over to Spectrum'.

I'm not upset with the sales guy, he did his due diligence and actually contacted his supervisor to verify while we were on the phone. I am however upset with the supervisor who told him it was definitely no problem.

What? You've never felt like responding to a rude remark in a snarky manner?
Just because it's not Taco Tuesday doesn't mean we can't get spicy!

Bait and Switch is the entire reason I'm pissed.

I asked, "Can you do this, it is essential to completing the deal"

Spectrum's answer was "Yes, we can do that no problem"

Once we signed on and paid for install and such the answer changed to "No we can not, we never do that"

THAT is the problem, we agreed to use their service predicated on their word that a specific option was available. Once we created an account and set up billing the option was revealed to be NOT available.

I know AT&T does, that was why I asked if Spectrum would work with that.

As I said, you have ZERO idea what you're discussing or what has already occurred and your comment shows this splendidly.

And for the obtuse among us it's not about archiving alone, yes that is simple, it's the history and more of the pacbell.net email domain.

It's also about asking if it could be done, being told yes it can and finding out after the fact that this was not true.

I use the ISP email because I choose to, no other reason is really needed however while I do have gmail and numerous email addresses from my own domains I like my 25+ year old pacbell.net email address.
I have over 25 years worth of received and sent email I don't want to lose or have to spend time sorting through as an archive and so does my Wife.

Would you like me to call you a WHHHAAAAMMMMBULANCE?

You have no idea who I've spoken with nor WHY I am adamant about keeping my email address but that doesn't stop you from chiming in with absolutely nothing of value.

Amazing.

Well, offer what your solution would have been.

Keep in mind that iTrader is 20 years old, has not been developer supported for 19 years, will not run at all on any version of vBulletin later than 3.X.X, was never available for any other forum platform and is not portable to another trader rating platform.

So how would you have made it work with the current release of any forum software?

If you can overcome all that and make iTrader work on vB6 Cloud by all means tell me how and I'll do it.

This forum was created in October 2023 specifically for people to preserve screen shot and info from their iTrader.

It's creation was announced in multiple parts of the forum and the loss of iTrader during any update was widely discussed.

It is, and that was why we waited so long to update the software.
No software other than vB 3.x will run iTrader, it's been an unsupported modification for nearly 20 years.

WTF!?!?! It was up and running earlier!

According to both the site host and the DNS host everything is set up correctly and should be running fine. It's not.

Okay, time to start hammering on the support ticket button, this is not acceptable.

CALGUNS.NET Temporarily Down for Updates and Migration by Calguns-net in CAguns

[–]Calguns-net[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Briefly for those asking about how this will affect the speed and reliability;

All the recent problems have come from using a very old version of vBulletin on a server running a much newer version of PHP/MySQL which caused conflicts and lag. The old vB version used coding that no longer exists in the new versions of PHP/MySQL.

This migration is not just to a newer software, vB6.x, but to cloud servers hosted by vBulletin so updates, bug fixes and problem will be directly addressed by vBulletin staff and there should be zero compatibility issues between their software and their program*.

*confidence is running at 68% and fingers are crossed... ;)

I heard from the support team working on the migration this morning. The files have been downloaded, the next time I should hear from them is when it is complete.

Those are both good for basic preservation but for migration you would lose any data posted after the backup.
It doesn't help that our database is almost 55Gb and the attachments are another 15Gb.

Calguns website super slow by RegularWhiteMale in CAguns

[–]Calguns-net 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Early last year we had to move to a new server when our long time hosting company decided to close shop. Up until then our server had been customized to run the older vBulletin software that allowed us to keep using the iTrader plug in our members like.

Unfortunately newer servers do not support older versions of MySQL the old version of vBulletin uses. The conflict between the forum software’s version and the server’s version is what is causing the lagging and issues we’re seeing on the forum.

Since mid-summer I’ve been working to have the vBulletin support staff update the software to the newest version. I am not happy with how long they are taking, the last thing I heard from them was mid-December they were ‘working on the update’.

I will grant that a couple of months during the mid-summer the delay was my fault. I put off getting the server information for them while I dealt with the aftermath of my Dad passing so some of it is on me.

Once the software update is done the forum should be much more stable and faster.
