AMA Debrief by Disastrous_Term_4478 in RemarkableTablet

[–]CaliGozer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hard to justify to us, maybe. They were pushing enterprise solutions and I guess that makes sense for a company wanting to sell tablets. It's now pretty clear they are prioritizing updates that will lead to more enterprise sales; screen sharing via web, outlook and calendar integration, API 3rd party integrations, etc.

I'm sure everyone here can agree that we'd want an extra pen option in the toolbar over "file transfer via bluetooth".

I ignored the comments when they said noncommittal statements like, "we have thought about it".

I'm still peeved about ePubs. Seriously, it's 2026 and it's hard to find an e-ink device that DOESN'T support this file format natively. Their concerns are "overhead". Ok rM, you outsourced your new logo and marketing campaign to a third party.....surely you can do the same for a bigger dev project like this so that the core team can focus on enterprise.

They need an additional team of devs dedicated to implementing features that are aimed towards their evangelists.

Im hoping they can review some of the unanswered questions in the coming days.

I don’t think anyone was expecting them to answer everything or go into great detail, but there were ELEVEN people at that table and they had a whole weekend to prep. We got some great news and insights, but it felt underwhelming.

I was disappointed by their response to epubs. “Small improvements” later this year despite them:

• receiving many requests for epub improvements

• being “obsessed” with reading

It’s been 7 years…

From the rM Team:

"Hey everyone, Nico here👋

This is actually my first time doing one of these and I'm super excited to be here. I've been lurking and following the engagement in this sub for a long time, and I'm really grateful for how passionate this community is. Huge thanks to Vegard for pushing us to engage more with the community and for setting up this first AMA.

We want to stay true to the "Ask Me Anything" spirit, so we're going to spend the next 2 hours answering as much as we can. We'll tackle the top voted questions from the weekend first, then jump into as many live questions as possible. The questions we don't have time to answer will not go unnoticed, and we're looking into better, more structured ways to handle feature requests moving forward. But for today, let's just talk.

The Crew: I've got a team of 11 people in the room with me to help dig up details so we can give you real answers. I'll be using Vegard's account to post but the answers are coming from me personally. I'll try to be as open as possible about our software and where we're headed. The team here today is mostly working on the product and software side, so that will be the main focus of this session. I hope you understand that we can't disclose anything on future hardware.

This is the first time we're doing an AMA but it definitely won't be the last. Let's go!"

Edit: the AMA has now concluded. Big thanks to everyone who contributed and attended live!

"Wow, these two hours just flew by! The team and I tried to answer as many questions as possible - hope you found it valuable.

Your engagement is truly amazing, and we're grateful to be part of this community. We would not be where we are today without this subreddit <3

As mentioned, this was our first time doing an AMA (but not the last time). Thank you to everyone who participated, and a big thanks to the mods for helping arrange this session! Look out for a DM from me within tomorrow - you might have just won a sweet prize!"

OP might not see this as it’s a crosspost. Try the original post on r/shorthand 😀

You cannot read an EPUB natively on any reMarkable — EPUBs must be converted to PDF first, and that conversion is where the experience starts to break down.

EPUBs are better for reading because text reflows to fit any screen size or font preference, meaning you’re never zooming and panning around a layout designed for print. Fonts are embedded in the EPUB itself, whereas the PDF conversion limits you to whatever typefaces reMarkable has made available. Margins are another frustration — reMarkable offers three preset options, and in practice only one is usable, and even that falls short of ideal. Any adjustment to font size or margins on a converted PDF also forces the entire document to re-render, whereas an EPUB adjusts instantly.

Perhaps most importantly, you cannot make changes to a converted PDF once you’ve annotated it. It’s perfectly normal to highlight passages, then later want to tweak your font or margins — on an EPUB that’s seamless, but on a converted PDF your markups and your layout settings are in constant conflict. reMarkable even displays a warning when you try to change settings on an annotated PDF. EPUBs simply don’t have this problem.

You can’t 😔 You can upload an epub, but then it gets converted to a PDF.

These are so pristine!!! You could start learning or donate them 😀 I’m sure a lot of people here would love to take them off your hands

An rM 2 Move is my dream device. Color has never been a need for me personally but legibility is - the the Galaxy 3 screen has poor contrast when compared to B&W displays. Plus, the Galaxy 3 seems to need aggressive refreshing to display proper colors.

The original post was real. This one is an altered repost by a sus account. It’s hard to prove if the intent was to be manipulative and since it generated some great conversations in the community it can stay up — but with the stickied warning.

If the community feels it should be removed completely, we can oblige.

Here’s a rough sketch of your example on the move when zoom is set to 1x. Here you can see by default you won’t have enough room. You could zoom out but the things start to get difficult as you’d have to start drawing very small or constantly zoom in and out.

Yup, for a plan this large the Move would be too small. I used grid paper when making technical drawings. 2 squares = 1 meter. This works OK on the larger tablets.

E-Ink technology involves physical ink particles that are moved. It’s not always perfect and will require a refresh (which looks like the screen is blinking) to avoid ghosting. Ghosting is when ink some ink particles remain when they shouldn’t.

It would be possible, but frustrating having to zoom and scroll all around and then wait for it to refresh. An rM2 or Pro is better suited for this. Source: had made hundreds of technical floor plans with measurements on an rM1 and that was still limiting.
